This is the first time an international lantern design competition and festival has been held in Vietnam, attracting 16 teams with more than 100 artisans from 5 countries including China, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.
As a result, the lantern work “Sacred Soul of Vietnam” by the Hoi An Craft team won first prize; second prize went to a Korean unit. Vietnam also won one third prize and one consolation prize.
The work “Sacred Soul of Vietnam” is 70m long and 20m wide, and was made over 2 months by 12 workers, mainly using paper from water coconut trees from the Vietnamese Paper Garden (Cam Thanh commune, Hoi An city).
With a creative and skillful expression, imbued with Hoi An's cultural identity, the work "Sacred Soul of Vietnam" helps everyone feel a colorful Hoi An on each lantern, or the images on the wharf and under the boat recall a bustling commercial port.
Ms. Chen Jia - Cultural Director of Yuyuan INC, a member of Fosun Group (China), a member of the Jury, shared: “Hoi An artisans have breathed life into the culture and long history of Vietnam into their lantern works, using the art of light to convey love and pride in the history of the nation as well as honoring traditional Vietnamese culture.
In particular, it also shows great creativity when using environmentally friendly materials: water coconut trees to create an artistic masterpiece. We have been exposed to many creative methods in lantern art in the world, but the creativity in the way of Hoi An artisans is the first time we have witnessed it.
On this occasion, the Vietnam Record Organization also awarded 3 records: The largest international lantern festival in Vietnam; The longest lantern road inspired by Vietnamese and international cultural symbols in Vietnam; The largest lantern cluster in Vietnam (the work "Sacred Soul of Vietnam").
