According to statistics, the incidence of 10 common mental disorders accounts for about 14.9% of the population, equivalent to nearly 15 million people.
Depression and anxiety account for a high proportion, about 5-6% of the population. Other disorders include schizophrenia (0.47%), epilepsy (0.33%), mental retardation (0.63%), senile dementia (0.88%), adolescent behavioral disorders (0.9%), alcohol abuse (5.3%) and drug abuse (0.3%).
Notably, in children, mental health problems account for about 12%, equivalent to more than 3 million children in need of mental health services.
Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for 60-70% of cases. In 2020, Vietnam had an estimated 500,000 people with Alzheimer's disease, but only about 5,000 (equivalent to 1%) were diagnosed and treated. The lack of diagnosis and treatment results in a huge burden on families and society, as patients require intensive care.
Despite the high prevalence of mental disorders and Alzheimer’s disease, access to mental health care remains limited. Many people are not fully aware of these disorders, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment.
The Central Committee of the Vietnam Young Physicians Association proposed to include chronic kidney disease, Alzheimer's disease, and mental disorders in the list of diseases in the National Strategy for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases for the 2026-2035 period to facilitate the development of comprehensive strategies and plans to effectively prevent and control chronic diseases with high rates of disability and mortality.
