Proposal to increase speed of Trung Luong - My Thuan expressway to 90 km/h

Vietnam Expressway Administration proposed to increase the operating speed from 80 km/h to 90 km/h for some types of vehicles on Trung Luong - My Thuan and Cao Bo - Mai Son expressways.

According to a report recently sent to the Ministry of Transport, the Department of Expressways has proposed increasing the maximum speed for passenger cars with up to 30 seats (except buses) and trucks with a capacity of 3.5 tons or less. Some sections on the Cao Bo - Mai Son route (Ninh Binh) do not have a median strip, so vehicles maintain the maximum speed limit of 80 km/h.

According to the Department of Expressways, the Vietnamese and international standards and regulations system has two types of speed: design speed and operating speed. Design speed is used to calculate the main geometric technical standards of the road in case of difficult terrain.

The allowable operating speed depends on the actual condition, technical and functional condition of the road, terrain, climate, weather, traffic conditions, to ensure safety during operation. Normally, the maximum allowable speed is greater than or equal to the selected design speed.

The Vietnam Expressway Administration believes that increasing the maximum speed allowed during road operation has a scientific and practical basis. This adjustment will contribute to increasing the speed of vehicles participating in traffic, improving the efficiency of investment and operation of road sections.

For limited four-lane North-South expressways such as Mai Son - National Highway 45, Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet, National Highway 45 - Nghi Son, Nghi Son - Dien Chau, Nha Trang - Cam Lam, the Expressway Department recommends that the Ministry of Transport direct units to review traffic organization plans and consider raising the maximum speed limit on the routes to 90 km/h for some types of vehicles. In the next phase, the agencies will consider raising the maximum speed limit to 90 km/h for the remaining vehicles such as cars with more than 30 seats and trucks over 3.5 tons.

Last month, the Ministry of Transport requested relevant units to study the plan to put 4-lane expressways into operation with a speed of 90 km/h instead of 80 km/h on expressways with 4 lanes invested in.

Trung Luong - My Thuan Expressway is 51 km long, 16 m wide, with 4 lanes, each direction has 6 emergency stops (no emergency lane), each stop is 4 - 5 km apart. Cao Bo - Mai Son route is more than 15 km long, the main expressway section has 4 lanes for motor vehicles, the roadbed width is 17 m, the design speed is 80 km/h.
