De Choat's scandals are even more noticeable than his music projects. He has just released a series of products, but they have been criticized for their quality and low views.
The second half of 2020 is probably an unforgettable time for hiphop lovers in particular and music enthusiasts in general. Two rap shows, especially Rap Viet , with its unprecedented appeal at that time, directly brought a music genre that was little noticed into a trend for many years after that.
With such influence, the champion Vietnamese Rap Season 1 - De Choat, received a lot of attention and expectations. It is easy to see that the championship is the perfect launching pad for the male rapper to aim for higher positions after the program.
However, in the following years, De Choat could no longer maintain the form that helped him conquer Vietnamese Rap. Even the rapper's personal scandals get more attention than his music products.
Many times encountered controversy
In fact, the first period after Vietnamese Rap Season 1, De Choat still had relatively clear steps. He continuously released products, experimented with many musical colors, and the MVs were also carefully invested and impressive in terms of visuals. However, both Hands up , Walk on the road of freedom , Gangsta Birthday , good Vietnam International Cypher … all failed to achieve the expected effect.
The above mentioned weakness shows the harshness of the market, when success on game shows does not necessarily guarantee the same in personal products. On the other hand, De Choat also received a lot of doubts, the male rapper's appeal gradually decreased over time. De Choat's change of stage name to DC is considered a move to show his desire for change, but that did not help him explode more.
Perhaps, the period of time that De Choat received the most attention after Rap Viet , was when he started the war that stirred up the underground community. However, that attention brought more scandal instead of helping the male rapper revive his name. In April 2023, De Choat posted on social media with the content challenging rappers to compete in "rhyme", implying that many rappers were too busy showing off their image and forgetting the core elements of rap.
Immediately after that, a series of rappers responded, from ICD to RichChoi, Godthic, 71T... Notably, although he was the one who started the debate, De Choat chose to remain silent, delete or hide many related posts, and lock his personal page. The above action made the rap community fed up.
Not stopping there, the male rapper continued to cause controversy when he accused G5R - his former team - of using the song. Westside Squad featuring his voice without permission. Immediately, the owner of the song, Jombie, responded harshly, accusing De Choat of being ungrateful, asking him to write the lyrics but then turning his back. Most recently, De Choat also posted a status wishing him a happy new year with content that was considered sarcastic to his colleague. The above action received a wave of harsh criticism, and the male rapper later had to disable the comment section.
During the above-mentioned scandals, De Choat still maintained posting music products. However, the quality of the songs decreased significantly compared to the beginning. Vietnamese Rap ended. Besides the lack of well-prepared MVs, the music tracks also showed a lack of production. Even the lyrics - which was the strength that helped De Choat conquer Vietnamese Rap - now also has fluctuating quality.
Except Baptism received positive reviews, most of De Choat's products in the past year received mixed reactions, many opinions expressed disappointment.
Don't recognize Cricket in music
Recently, De Choat has released 10 music tracks with the same identity. However, because they are not on the same album or EP, all the songs have separate, separate content, without a concept or overall story.
Most of the tracks are made in the old-school style popular in the South in the 2010s, with themes about life, with moderate tempo and slow flow. In between, De Choat also added some tracks with lofi hiphop material, for example The best day ever .
However, the project of the former champion Vietnamese Rap was barely received. After several days of release, the views of the songs were only a few thousand - an incredibly low number compared to De Choat's position in the past and the fact that it was posted on a YouTube channel with over 1.2 million subscribers. Rap forums are the rare places where De Choat's brainchild is still discussed, but opinions are that the male rapper's music is old-fashioned and lacks investment.
If anyone has followed the journey of Vietnamese Rap season 1, it will be difficult to recognize the former champion as the owner of the above products. De Choat's performance in all 10 tracks can be summed up in two words "sketchy". The sloppiness is shown in the production, flow selection, lyric writing, and the lack of updating music trends.
For example in Three-faced Civet and Cricket Choat intentionally demonstrate their rhyming ability, when most rap songs use double rhymes: One side in the middle/the other two sides are Dear/Have you thought about this yet/Or should we continue as promised . However, the flow is quite boring, not to mention the arrangement is not very trendy, the sound layers are quite thin. In addition, the lyrics written by De Choat are also obscure, creating a feeling of forced rhyme.
Or in Respectfully , the space that De Choat used to shout out for the names that made Vietnamese rap, the music track also created a feeling of boredom, even lacking in musicality somewhere. Former champion Vietnamese Rap performing unrhymed rap verses, accompanied by a lack of rhythmic flow, more like reading than rapping. Not to mention, the delivery style only emphasizes the end of the sentence, throughout the whole song, also causing a feeling of fatigue.
The rare bright spot of the project lies in the track. The best day , when De Choat's rustic rap verses show harmony with the lofi hiphop beat. However, that's still too little compared to a mixtape with many works.
Never before have De Choat's products been so ignored. If they continue to perform as they are now, what will the audience remember about the former champion? Vietnamese Rap In the future there will probably be only noise.
