Gonorrhea is sexually transmitted with common symptoms including difficulty urinating, abdominal pain, abnormal discharge, itchy throat, difficulty swallowing...
Dr. Vu Thi Thuy Trang, Dermatology - Cosmetic Dermatology specialist, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that gonorrhea is an infection caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Both men and women can get the disease if they have unsafe sex. The disease affects many different organs in the body at the same time, typically: genitals, throat, rectum, joints...
Gonorrhea usually has an incubation period of a few days to a week. During this time, the disease has no obvious symptoms. When the disease develops, symptoms often appear such as abnormally colored genital discharge; pain when urinating; difficulty urinating; pain and swelling of the testicles in men, pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis in women, pain during sexual intercourse, and abnormal bleeding between periods.
Gonorrhea in the throat (through oral sex) or rectum (through anal sex) is less common with specific symptoms such as: itchy throat, discomfort, soreness, difficulty swallowing, itchy anus, discharge, pain during bowel movements.
If not detected and treated early, the disease can leave many dangerous complications for health. People who have had the disease and been treated are still at risk of reinfection if they continue to have sex with someone infected with the virus. Factors that increase the risk of infection include: having sex with many people, being young, having sex with a new partner with a history of gonorrhea, having had other sexually transmitted diseases.
In addition to sexual contact, the disease can also be transmitted from mother to child during normal birth, affecting the eyes of newborns. However, gonorrhea bacteria cannot survive for long outside the body, so there is very little risk of contracting the disease when touching objects such as toilet seats, clothes, etc.
If gonorrhea is not treated promptly, it can cause many dangerous complications. In women, over time, the bacteria can move into the reproductive tract, affecting the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. This is one of the main causes of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) with severe pain. If it causes salpingitis, the disease often leaves scars in the fallopian tubes, making pregnancy difficult and possibly causing ectopic pregnancy.
In men, the disease can cause scarring in the urethra, abscess formation inside the penis, affecting fertility, epididymitis, vas deferens inflammation, infection spreading into the blood, causing rare but serious complications such as arthritis, heart valve damage...
Therefore, Dr. Vu Thi Thuy Trang shared that patients should immediately contact a Dermatologist - Dermatologist if they notice any worrying symptoms, such as a burning sensation when urinating, unusual discharge from the genitals or rectum. In addition, people who have been previously diagnosed with gonorrhea should have regular check-ups, because if not treated effectively, the risk of reinfection will increase.
