MISTAKES WHEN TREATMENT BY… LEAF PORES
Doctors at Hanoi Oncology Hospital have just performed surgery on a 52-year-old female patient with late-stage breast cancer (3C).
About a year ago, the patient was found to have a tumor in the right breast, and was indicated for hospitalization for surgery. However, the patient did not seek treatment, took "traditional medicine" at home and applied leaves. At the beginning of this year, the tumor increased in size, ulcerated, and became necrotic. The patient went to the Hanoi Oncology Hospital for examination and was indicated for hospitalization. At this time, the breast tumor was up to 20 - 25 cm in size, with skin ulcers, fluid discharge, infiltration of the skin and pectoralis major muscles, and many lymph nodes in the right axillary region were attached in clusters. The results showed that the patient had stage 3C right breast cancer. The patient was emaciated and exhausted, requiring a blood transfusion and a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy to treat symptoms and improve her physical condition before surgery.
With many concerns about the risks during surgery because the patient was very thin and weak, the tumor was large, and the surgery might not have enough skin to cover the defect, Dr. Vu Kien, Head of the Department of Breast Surgery - Gynecology, Deputy Director of Hanoi Oncology Hospital, chaired the consultation. After the consultation, the team came up with a plan to rotate the flap in many positions to have enough skin to cover the defect while still ensuring the complete removal of the tumor and axillary lymph nodes.
Due to lack of early treatment, the patient had many lymph nodes, the largest of which was the size of a duck egg, attached to the axillary vein, deep into the subclavian region, and many other small lymph nodes. During the surgery, the doctors removed the entire right breast and removed all the lymph nodes.
SHOULD HAVE REGULAR HEALTH CHECK-UPS
According to oncologists, swollen lymph nodes in the armpit of breast cancer patients warn that cells are growing very quickly and strongly, in which the lymphatic system in the armpit begins to be attacked by cancer cells.
After surgery, the patient's condition was stable, the large defect from the tumor removal was closed and healed well. The patient is continuing to receive medical care and will continue to receive adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
According to Dr. Vu Kien, who directly performed the surgery on the patient, in reality, doctors have encountered many cases where cancer was detected but the opportunity for treatment was missed, shortening the life span. Furthermore, blindly trusting in unproven methods is not only costly and a waste of money, but can also be harmful to health, making the disease more dangerous and progressing worse.
"Everyone should have regular health check-ups to promptly detect and treat (if there is cancer) according to the regimen prescribed by the oncologist," Dr. Vu Kien noted.
5 STAGES OF BREAST CANCER
Stage 0 : Abnormal cells appear, have not spread to surrounding tissue, the chance of cure is very high. If not detected and treated promptly, the disease can invade surrounding breast tissue.
Stage 1 : Invasive stage. This is the earliest stage of breast cancer. There are very small tumors, the largest diameter is about 2 cm. There are no lymph nodes metastasizing to the armpit area.
Stage 2: Development stage, including: 2A (breast cancer cells are developing but still have little effect on other organs) and 2B (tumor remains the same size as at the end of stage 2A but has metastasis to the axillary lymph nodes on the same side and is mobile; tumor gradually grows, diameter is greater than 5 cm, no longer metastasizes to the axillary lymph nodes).
Stage 3: Extensive stage. Cancer cells have grown strongly and spread to the lymph nodes but have not spread to other organs. This stage is divided into: 3A, 3B and 3C, based on the size of the tumor and the volume of the lymph nodes. In stage 3C, the patient has tumors of various sizes. There are lymph node metastases in the lower arm or there are lymph node metastases in the breast on the same side.
Stage 4: Metastatic stage. Breast cancer spreads or metastasizes to other distant organs in the body, usually the bones, liver, brain, or lungs.
