The 2023-2024 school year's excellent student exam had 5,812 candidates participating, of which 3,359 candidates won prizes (accounting for 55.79%), an increase of 1,076 students compared to the previous school year. Last year, the number of candidates participating in the exam was 4,589 candidates, of which 2,283 candidates won prizes (accounting for 49.75%).
Among the localities, Hanoi leads with a total of 184 prize-winning contestants, Ho Chi Minh City with 110, followed by Hai Phong, Nghe An, Hai Duong with 98, 90 and 89 prize-winning contestants respectively.
Among the prize-winning candidates, the valedictorian in Mathematics scored 31.5/40 points - Ta Duc Anh, a 12th grade Math 1 student at the National University of Education High School for the Gifted (Hanoi National University of Education). The valedictorian's score was 5.5 points higher than the valedictorian in Mathematics who scored 26 points - a student at the Natural Sciences High School for the Gifted.

The valedictorian of Physics is Truong Phi Hung, a 12th grade student majoring in Physics at Bac Giang High School for the Gifted, with 34 points. Truong Phi Hung has achieved many outstanding achievements such as: 11th grader won the Second Prize in the 2023 National Excellent Student Competition; Silver Medal at the 2023 European Physics Olympiad, Bronze Medal at the 2022 Unlimited Physics Olympiad with the 1st score in Vietnam and 10th in the world.

According to the announcement of the Ministry of Education and Training, for the international Olympic subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Informatics and Biology, the Ministry will call a number of candidates for the national team selection round in March 2024. To enter this round, the minimum score candidates need to achieve in Mathematics is 18; Physics 26.5; Chemistry 25.875; Biology 25.5; Informatics 16.4 points.
