Russian media reported that crowds surrounded the plane belonging to the Russian airline Red Wings.
Authorities were forced to close the airport in Makhachkala. The Dagestan Health Department said the incident left more than 20 people injured, including police officers and civilians, two of whom are in critical condition.

Videos on social media showed some in the crowd waving Palestinian flags and others trying to overturn police cars. Anti-Semitic slogans could be heard being shouted and some in the crowd checked the passports of arriving passengers, apparently with the aim of identifying Israelis on the flight.
In a statement Sunday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said Israel "expects Russian law enforcement agencies to protect the safety of all Israeli citizens and Jews wherever they are and to take decisive action against rioters and indiscriminate incitement against Jews and Israelis."
Mr Netanyahu's office added that the Israeli ambassador to Russia is working with Russia to keep Israelis and Jews safe.
The Russian Interior Ministry said the videos would be used to identify those who stormed the airport and those involved would be brought to justice.
The Dagestan regional government called on people to remain calm and not to participate in such protests.
“We call on the people to be aware of the current situation in the world. The federal government and international organizations are making every effort to achieve a ceasefire for Gaza civilians… we call on the people not to succumb to the provocations of destructive groups and not to create panic in society,” the statement said.
