The University of Melbourne has added 11 high schools to its list of direct admission schools based on academic records, bringing the total to 23 schools.
On the morning of January 4, Mr. Lam Minh Khoa, the University of Melbourne's admissions representative in Vietnam, said that from this year, the school will directly admit students based on their academic records from 23 high schools in Vietnam, an increase of 11 schools compared to previous years.
List of 23 schools
Previously, only students from specialized schools in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City were considered for direct admission to the first year instead of having to take a university preparatory course.
"The new policy will take effect from the July 2024 intake," said Mr. Khoa.
According to Mr. Khoa, to apply to the University of Melbourne, students from the schools on the list need to have a grade 12 grade point average (GPA) of 8.5 or higher, an English certificate of at least 6.5 IELTS (no skill below 6) or TOEFL iBT from 79 points, PTE from 58 points or higher, depending on the field of study.
Explaining, Mr. Khoa said that through observation and evaluation over 10 years, the University of Melbourne found that students graduating from specialized schools and key schools in Vietnam have good academic ability. The school also relied on data on entrance scores and high school graduation exam scores provided by the Department of Education and Training of each province to make this decision.

If they do not graduate from the 23 schools on the list, Vietnamese students this year still have the opportunity to participate in direct admission if they have an SAT score of 1320/1600 or higher, ACT from 28/36, GPA from 8.8.
"This year, the school applied this policy for the first time to four countries in the world including Vietnam, Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines," said Mr. Khoa.
Mr. Khoa said the new policies help the school expand opportunities for students while ensuring the quality of input. According to Mr. Khoa, universities in Australia often consider admission based on scores. Therefore, when studying in high school or taking the SAT, students should try to focus on achieving the highest possible score.
Many universities in Australia have recently expanded their direct admission to students from specialized schools and key schools in Vietnam, including the top 8 prestigious universities such as the University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales, the Australian National University...
According to the QS World University Rankings 2024, the University of Melbourne is the best university in Australia and the top 14 in the world. The university currently has 52,000 students, including 600 Vietnamese students. Tuition fees at the University of Melbourne range from 45,000-55,000 AUD (740-900 million VND)/year, the highest in the medical field.
