Three teams have also achieved impressive results here.

The challenge of responsibility for future global citizens

After many rounds of competition throughout the two summer months and surpassing nearly 170 other teams, the three best teams of the New Zealand Future Skills Summer Camp 2023, namely Sandbox Junior Tech Club (Vinschool Hanoi), The Syntax Squad (Vinschool Ho Chi Minh City), and Saigonplatypus (Le Quy Don Secondary School and Western Australia Secondary School, Ho Chi Minh City) competed at the New Zealand Programming Summer Camp - Asia with other students from Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

The Vietnam and international summer camp programs are both organized by Education New Zealand (ENZ) with the aim of equipping the young generation in the region with global citizenship skills, especially knowledge and skills related to computer science and intercultural communication.

This year's New Zealand - Asia Programming Summer Camp chose "Climate Action" - goal number 13 of the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations - as the theme.

Through this, the teams learned how to use technology to convey messages about the importance of climate action, and proposed activities that can be applied in life to improve practices from local to global.

According to Huynh Nguyen Khoi Nguyen - a member of The Syntax Squad, the team's greatest experience in this round was the time spent researching content and programming a complete website. "This helped the members to go beyond their comfort zone and explore more about their own abilities," Nguyen shared.

The inspiration for The Syntax Squad to develop the idea, according to Nguyen, came through reading official sources from the Vietnamese Government about the consequences and measures to respond to climate change.

" Code" a day, learn a lot

Not only a playground for learning programming, summer camp also provides opportunities for young people to practice and develop other important skills.

From foreign languages, research & analysis, teamwork, to problem solving... are all important skills for the young generation to be ready to integrate into today's rapidly changing world.

In addition, the Vietnamese representatives also said that they have observed and learned a lot from the investment and performance of international friends. Typically, the representative from Indonesia had a smart idea of integrating interactive games to increase the appeal of the website that the team designed.

The Thai team presented their presentations fluently and uniquely. The Korean team brought an interesting approach to the issue by delving into just one topic - Fast Fashion, and relating evidence such as the influence of the billion-dollar K-pop entertainment industry on people's consumption trends.

"Teams from different countries approached the topic with their own country's perspective and issues, giving each website a unique color," commented Hoang Pham Bao Tran, a member of the Sandbox Junior Tech Club team.

Meeting and interacting with peers from many different countries also helped the Vietnamese teams broaden their horizons and improve their understanding of cultural diversity, history and the challenges of climate change that other countries in the region are facing.

"Through this summer camp, our team members have also understood more about the importance of taking action on climate change in protecting future lives, as well as the cooperation of many countries around the world to achieve sustainable development goals," said Le Ha Minh Anh, a member of the Saigonplatypus team.

With excellent performances, 3 teams from Vietnam made a positive impression on international experts and friends. Among them, Sandbox Junior Tech Club surpassed 12 other teams in the region to win the overall championship.

Nguyen Tra My, a member of the Sandbox Junior Tech Club, said the summer camp helped her see more clearly her future direction, which is to pursue creativity and contribute to the community . She also shared her dream of becoming an architect who designs green buildings, a sustainable fashion designer and an environmental activist .

At the end of a memorable and rewarding journey, the members of the regional teams seem to have begun to reach new dreams and humanistic goals for their future learning and growth.
