According to Reuters , Mr. Kerry's spokesman said that former US Secretary of State Kerry informed the staff of the above information earlier that day after talking with President Biden earlier this week.
Mr. Kerry, 80, has been the US President's Special Envoy for Climate since 2021. While serving as Secretary of State under former President Barack Obama, he was considered an important negotiator who helped the parties reach the Paris Agreement on climate change in 2015, as well as the historic agreement on transitioning away from fossil fuels at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai last December.
Local media reported that Kerry plans to join President Biden’s campaign in the November presidential election, promoting Biden’s efforts to combat climate change.
Mr. Kerry was one of the first senior officials appointed by President Biden after winning the 2020 presidential election. He was appointed as special envoy for climate change without requiring confirmation from the US Senate.
Mr. Kerry also has a seat on the US National Security Council, marking the first time the agency has an official dedicated to climate issues.
