On October 5, former US President Donald Trump said he would likely take on the role of Speaker of the House of Representatives temporarily “if necessary,” as the Republican Party attempts to find a new leader to replace the recently ousted Kevin McCarthy.

Sharing on Fox News Digital (USA), Mr. Trump affirmed: “I was asked to speak up for unity because I have many friends in Congress... They asked if I would agree to take on this position for the party for a short period of time, until they find a new Speaker of the House. I will do it when necessary, if they cannot decide who will take this role.”

He also said he would take over the role for “30, 60 or 90 days” if the Republican bloc could not agree. However, former President Trump refused to reveal the name of the person who discussed the above.

Previously, Mr. Trump rejected the idea of running for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives because he was focusing on running for US President next year, and refused to confirm his support for any candidate for the position of House leader.

He is now considering a trip to Congress on October 11, when House Republicans hold a caucus for candidates running for Speaker of the House.

The speaker of the House of Representatives does not have to be a member of the House. Some critics say that under current House Republican rules, Mr. Trump is ineligible to serve as speaker because he is being indicted on multiple felony charges. However, House Republicans could vote to change that rule.
