(CLO) On March 11, former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested at Manila airport, after the Philippine government received an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for him on charges of "committing crimes against humanity".
Rodrigo Duterte is accused of presiding over a drug crackdown that has left more than 6,000 people dead, according to police figures.
Interpol's Manila office confirmed it had received an official copy of the arrest warrant from the ICC on the morning of March 11. Mr Duterte, 79, questioned the legal basis of the warrant, saying: "What is the law and what crime have I committed?" in a video posted by his daughter.

Mr. Duterte once withdrew the Philippines from the ICC, but according to the rules, the court still has jurisdiction to try crimes that took place when the country was a member, from 2016 to 2019. Now the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has hinted at the possibility of handing Mr. Duterte over to the ICC.
Before becoming president, Mr. Duterte was known for his tough approach to crime suppression when he was mayor of Davao City. During the 2016 election campaign, he vowed to eliminate crime regardless of pressure.
Despite his failing health and an arrest warrant from the ICC, Mr. Duterte filed to run for mayor of his hometown in October, seen as an attempt to consolidate power amid his family’s bitter feud with President Marcos Jr.
