Ha Noi Huyen, 22 years old, bought 5 corsets to wear to lose weight and reduce fat. A week later, both sides of her waist were bruised, bruised, and full of red marks.
Huyen is 1.5 m tall, weighs more than 60 kg, and tries every way to lose weight. She eats clean, eats raw, exercises, and jumps rope, but only loses a few kg and then gains it back. She went online and bought 5 sets of "anti-roll ventilation" belts. The seller said they are made of rubber, have good heat dissipation, and do not cause itching. The seller also advised wearing them regularly for two months, and the waist will be shaped into an hourglass shape, and the waist will be reduced by 4-7 cm. Wear them for 5-7 hours a day, "at first you will feel pain, which means the fat is being eliminated".
The set includes a belt and an anti-itch bra. The first day of wearing it, Huyen had pain on both sides of her waist, then itching, but she persisted in using it. The second day, her stomach appeared many dark spots and bruises due to the belt being so tight. A week later, she was forced to stop wearing it because she was in so much pain that she couldn't breathe, had difficulty standing up and sitting down, and her stomach was bruised and red.
"There was only pain, no weight loss," Huyen said, adding that she complained to the seller and was "blamed for not following the usage process so there was no refund."
Also using a corset, Ms. Mai, 29, said it was "not as effective as rumored." She wore it every day, except when she slept. Every time she went to the gym, she tightened the corset one notch to increase its effectiveness. In the early days, she had abdominal pain, thinking it was due to incorrect posture.
Fitness trainer Dinh Thi Bich, Sports and Culture Center, Hoang Mai district, where Ms. Mai practices, believes that wearing a belt actually hinders movement, causes imbalance, abdominal pain and only has a temporary fat-reducing effect. The trainer advises students to prioritize abdominal exercises and stop wearing a belt because it has no effect on fat loss.

Recently, the market has become popular with waist belts with many designs, colors and prices. Many people share that they wear this device all day, except when bathing, to slim their waists and firm their breasts. Ms. Huyen and Ms. Mai are two of many cases of complications due to using the belt.
Dr. Calvin Q Trinh, Head of the Musculoskeletal Correction Center at Hospital 1A (HCMC), said that this is only a temporary method for people with belly fat who want to wear a waist-tightening dress, and when removed, the fat is still there. In many cases, people wear the belt combined with exercise, and the weight loss results are mistakenly thought to be due to wearing the belt.
This method is to use a waist belt to tighten this area, squeeze the fat, but in fact the fat does not disappear but moves to other areas of the body, pressing on the stomach, lungs, diaphragm, chest causing discomfort. Wearing the belt regularly will create pressure on the abdomen, causing umbilical, groin, back, diaphragm hernias, in which inguinal and diaphragm hernias are emergency surgical cases, very dangerous.
The wearer always feels the stomach being squeezed, quickly full, even stomach pain. The pressure from the corset affects the stomach, causing the risk of food refluxing into the esophagus, which is not good for people with intestinal diseases. Women after giving birth using corsets can cause pain in the surgical wound. Recently, a 39-year-old woman used a corset to tighten her stomach to lose weight, then had stomach pain, vomiting, the doctor diagnosed her with a ruptured liver and internal bleeding.
"This is forced weight loss, which not only hinders movement but also affects daily eating activities," said the doctor.
Doctor Bui Duc Ngot, Department of General Surgery, Post Office Hospital, recommends that wearing a corset can lead to increased body temperature, decreased vital capacity (reduced lung breathing volume), and skin ulcers due to pressure. Long-term use can cause complications such as hemorrhoids, femoral hernia, inguinal hernia due to increased abdominal pressure, frequent urination, and digestive disorders.
Many people who are not fat still have belly fat because their pelvis is rotated forward, their lower abdomen is bulging, their buttocks are high and their body is pushed forward, giving them a duck-like shape. This is a typical condition of incorrect exercise posture. "In this case, wearing a corset will make the problem worse, causing back pain," the doctor said and advised going to the hospital to have the body adjusted and rotate the pelvis backwards.

World medical literature has recorded for centuries that women suffered internal organ damage from wearing corsets that were too tight. In a study published in Cureus in 2020, experts said that wearing tight clothing can cause organ damage due to "compression, bruising, and ischemia."
Dena Barsoum, a physical therapist and rehabilitation specialist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, USA, said that corsets also affect internal organs, causing them to move into abnormal positions, even cutting off the blood flow that allows them to function normally. Corsets can also cause digestive problems, constipation, reflux, and weaken the musculoskeletal system. The belt can compress the movement of the diaphragm, which is the muscle that separates the heart and lungs from other organs, which is not good for breathing.
Doctors recommend not to wear a belt continuously every day. To ensure safety, you should only wear the belt for one to two hours a day, at a comfortable level, and take it off when sleeping. If you want to lose weight, you should combine proper exercise with a scientific diet.
