French television station Quotidien said Mr Arnault said he thought Mr Musk was "an exceptional businessman", but details of what they discussed at lunch have not been released, nor is it clear what was on the menu.
Later in the day, Mr Musk joked at the VivaTech technology fair in France that he might team up with the Arnault family and launch a perfume.
As of June, Mr. Arnault had a fortune of $202 billion (4.7 trillion VND), making him the second richest person in the world after Mr. Musk, who has a net worth of $233 billion based on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
Musk has also had several meetings with European leaders over the past week. On June 16, he met with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss building a Tesla factory in France, Reuters reported.
The French government is trying to convince Mr Musk to build a Tesla factory in the country. Jean-Noël Barrot, France's digital minister, previously told CNBC: "It would be great to have a Tesla factory in France, there has been a lot of effort and work to make sure that this is feasible and possible."
Earlier on June 15, Mr. Musk discussed with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence, birth rates, European market rules and innovation. Prime Minister Meloni confirmed the information.
