The first "institute - school" medical cluster in Vietnam
On February 14, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health said that when mentioning the phrase "medical campus", people often immediately think of high-income countries with strongly developed health systems such as the US, UK, Australia, Japan...
But no, today, the city's health sector staff can confidently affirm that Vietnam has a "medical campus", which is the specialized medical cluster in Tan Kien commune, Binh Chanh district (HCMC).
Started in 2015, the above medical cluster is planned to concentrate hospitals, large medical facilities and universities in the health sector.
The connection between medical universities and hospitals and medical facilities not only helps improve the quality of health care for people but also creates an environment for advanced medical training and research.
In addition, Tan Kien medical cluster is also expected to contribute to reducing the load on hospitals in the city center and in the future will serve the medical examination and treatment of people in the Mekong Delta provinces.
It can be said that this is the first "institute - school" medical cluster formed in Vietnam according to the model standards of countries with developed healthcare systems in the world.
Previously in 2015, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee approved the planning project of Tan Kien medical cluster with an area of over 73 hectares.
After more than 10 years of deployment and implementation, up to now, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine and specialized hospitals, modern centers have been inaugurated and put into effective operation in phase 1 with a total area of 33.32 hectares.
What is in the first "medical campus" in Vietnam?
According to the Department of Health, Tan Kien medical cluster currently includes specific hospitals and schools such as: City Children's Hospital with a scale of 1,000 beds, this is one of the three final pediatric hospitals of the city and the southern provinces.
Blood Transfusion Hematology Hospital with a scale of 300 beds. The new facility in Tan Kien medical cluster has contributed significantly to the hospital's continuous improvement of medical examination and treatment quality and the development of many advanced and specialized techniques such as: chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation, cell pathology, etc.
City Forensic Center, the construction of a new facility here aims to improve the quality of the unit's operations and form a specialized forensic research and training center with modern, synchronous equipment.

The construction project of Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine (campus 2) started in 2021 and is expected to be inaugurated and put into operation in 2025.
115 Emergency Center (facility 2) includes a training area, practical training for out-of-hospital emergency specialists (Paramedic), has a specialized warranty and maintenance area for ambulances...
There is also a Trauma Hospital model with a scale of 1,000 beds, reducing the burden of trauma emergency care for general and specialized hospitals in the central medical cluster.
In addition, many other important projects such as: Test Calibration Center, Blood Bank, High-Tech Disease Screening Center and Practice Hospital of Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine... are also being implemented.
In particular, this area will be planned and built according to a green healthcare model, with a focus on investment in public service areas, parks, sports fields, and accommodation for patients' relatives.
Notably, Tan Kien medical cluster will be connected to Ring Road 3 and especially metro line 3.
These amenities not only create a friendly living and working environment but also improve the quality of local medical services.
