According to new data from Kaspersky Security Network (KSN), Vietnam’s cybersecurity situation has shown positive signs in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year. However, with the increasing complexity of cyberattacks, maintaining high vigilance and investing in security solutions remains a top priority.
From April to June 2024, Kaspersky successfully blocked 4,830,621 threats via websites on computers of Kaspersky Security Network (KSN) participants. The number of web threats has decreased significantly compared to 7,713,485 in the same period in 2023, contributing to improving Vietnam's ranking on the global cybersecurity map. Statistics show that 1 in 5 Vietnamese people have faced cybersecurity incidents on websites.
Cybercriminals continue to use two main methods to spread malware through web browsers: Exploiting vulnerabilities in browsers and plugins (drive-by download attacks) and social engineering attacks. Drive-by download attacks occur when users accidentally visit a website infected with malware, causing the malware to be downloaded and installed on the computer without the user's knowledge. With social engineering, bad guys lure users to download malicious files disguised as legitimate software. It can be seen that attackers are becoming more and more sophisticated, disguising malware to bypass static analysis and simulation tools.
Although web threats have decreased, the number of users attacked by malware spread via removable storage devices such as USBs, CDs and DVDs (local threats) remains worrying. Kaspersky detected 21,896,537 local attacks in Vietnam in Q2 2024, a slight decrease compared to 37.5% (30,909,482) in the same period in 2023.
This highlights the urgent need for comprehensive security solutions that go beyond the scope of traditional antivirus software. Firewalls, anti-rootkit tools, and the ability to control removable storage devices are essential layers of protection to prevent the risk of infection via offline devices.
“Vietnam’s positive cybersecurity picture over the past year is a testament to the successful cooperation between the Vietnamese Government and Kaspersky,” said Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager of Kaspersky Southeast Asia. “Cooperation initiatives between the two sides, such as the event “Cyber Defense: Enhancing Resilience for Businesses” co-organized by Kaspersky and the Department of Information Security (AIS), have significantly contributed to enhancing the country’s cyber defense capabilities.
