(CLO) A China-based travel agency has opened reservations for tours to the northeastern North Korean city of Rason, scheduled to take place from February to April, the company's website said on Monday.

The tour is scheduled to depart on February 12, as well as in March and April, according to the Koryo Tours website.

This tour, which costs about $720, includes four nights in Rason and two nights in Yanji, China, as well as visits to factories, markets and other tourist attractions in Rason and a Taekwondo demonstration.

In a related announcement, the company said programs for February, March and April are “not yet confirmed” as it awaits further information on the border opening date at Rason.

North Korea appears to be ready to accept Chinese tourists to Rason, as another China-based company, Young Pioneer Tours, has begun accepting applications for a tour to Rason scheduled for early March.

North Korea is also expected to open the new Kalma tourist area along its east coast in June, with hopes that it could seek to attract foreign tourists.

Koryo Tours, as well as another Chinese tour operator, announced in August 2024 that they expected the border to open to Chinese tourists by December of that year.

However, only Russian tourists have been able to visit North Korea since the country closed its borders in early 2020 to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Chinese tourists made up the majority of foreign tourists to North Korea before the pandemic. Chinese tourists accounted for an estimated 90% of foreign tourists to North Korea in 2019.
