Cong Phuong shines, Binh Phuoc Club is still defeated by HAGL by this character...

At Pleiku Stadium, fans were expecting an explosive, emotional match when Cong Phuong had the chance to face his old team HAGL. However, this did not happen in the first half. The technical quality of this half was not too high, when Binh Phuoc Club was too dependent on Cong Phuong and the team's attacks became easy to neutralize. Meanwhile, without using foreign players, HAGL was not too superior to their first-class opponent.

In a rather dull match with no impressive coordination between the two sides, HAGL made a difference after a set piece. In the 21st minute, from a free kick from the right wing by Minh Vuong, the ball lightly touched the head of a Binh Phuoc Club player and then found Dung Quang Nho. After that, the former U.23 Vietnam player tapped the ball close to the goal, opening the score for HAGL.

A gift for Cong Phuong, but Trung Kien saved HAGL

In the second half, the game situation remained almost unchanged. The two teams were still relatively deadlocked and Binh Phuoc Club relied on their opponents' mistakes to equalize. In the 55th minute, Ho Tuan Tai's pressing effort confused Phan Dinh Vu Hai. The HAGL goalkeeper cleared the ball but it found Cong Phuong's position and the striker immediately took advantage of the opportunity to score. This was also the goal that sealed the 1-1 draw because in the remaining time of the match, the attacking ability of both HAGL and Binh Phuoc Club showed no signs of improvement.

The two teams were forced into a penalty shootout. Coach Le Quang Trai decided to send goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien, who had just won the 2024 AFF Cup, onto the field to replace Vu Hai. And this was a wise decision. Trung Kien successfully blocked two 11m kicks from Huynh Tan Sinh and Ho Tuan Tai, contributing greatly to HAGL's 4-3 victory and a ticket to the quarterfinals of the National Cup.

Also on the afternoon of January 12, another match in the National Cup was decided in a penalty shootout. After a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes, Ninh Binh Club won 4-2 against Ba Ria Vung Tau.
