Despite the minimum monthly wage for garment workers in Bangladesh increasing to 12,500 taka ($113) from 8,300 taka since November 7, thousands of garment workers in the inflation-hit country have gone on strike demanding a pay rise.
According to DW, Bangladesh's 3,500 garment factories are suppliers to many of the world's top fashion names, including Levi's, Zara and H&M... Strikes by garment workers in the area around Bangladesh's capital Dhaka have been going on for weeks, demanding higher wages, as current wages cannot cover living expenses.
In the industrial city of Gazipur, about 25 kilometers (15 miles) north of the capital Dhaka, about 10,000 workers walked out of factories after failing to get enough pay. Other large-scale strikes were also held in areas around Dhaka. Garment workers demanded a minimum wage of 23,000 taka ($209).
