The Department of Science and Technology of Ben Tre province said that in recent times, the Provincial Party Committee and the People's Committee of Ben Tre province have always paid attention to and supported the creation, construction and development of brands for agricultural products. The science and technology sector has coordinated with consulting units and localities to create, manage and develop geographical indications for the province's key agricultural products.
Durian was granted the geographical indication “Ben Tre” in 2020. Durian products with geographical indications include: Monthong and Ri6. These two varieties play a leading role, accounting for about 90% of the area and output of durian in Ben Tre province. To create a durian material area for domestic consumption and export, Ben Tre has built a durian production area, with a total linked area of nearly 209 hectares, with 10 growing area codes with an area of 264 hectares.
Giant freshwater prawn was granted a certificate of geographical indication “Ben Tre” in 2021. The project “Building, managing and developing geographical indication “Ben Tre” for giant freshwater prawn products” is one of the key scientific and technological tasks, aiming to implement the action plan for developing the provincial shrimp industry by 2025.
Sea crabs were granted geographical indications in 2021. The total area of sea crab farming in the province is about 18.3 thousand hectares, with an estimated output of more than 1.5 thousand tons/year. Notably, Thanh Phu district accounts for 77% of the total crab farming area in the province, with 14 thousand hectares. Sea crab varieties include mud crabs and green crabs. The entire area of "Ben Tre sea crabs" is farmed extensively. In Thanh Phu district, sea crabs can be raised with shrimp or fish in rice fields, mangrove forests, or in ponds and lagoons. There are no households specializing in sea crab farming.
Four-season mangoes were granted Ben Tre geographical indication in 2022. To effectively manage and exploit geographical indications, Ben Tre has built links between cooperatives, cooperative groups and enterprises; built codes for mango growing areas for export; supported VietGAP certification consulting for farmers in Thanh Phong and Thanh Hai communes (Thanh Phu). Up to now, the process of processing and preserving 3 products from four-season mangoes has been successfully built: dried mango, mango drink and mango powder. At the same time, the production technology process and effective application of processing and preservation equipment models have been transferred, and products from four-season mangoes have been developed for Thanh Phong Agricultural Cooperative, Thanh Phu district.
Rambutan was granted Ben Tre geographical indication in 2023. The geographical area corresponding to Ben Tre rambutan geographical indication includes: Cho Lach district and Chau Thanh district.
Two products have just been granted Geographical Indications in 2024: Thanh Phu Rice and Ben Tre Clams.
It is known that Ben Tre continues to register for geographical indication protection for industrial coconut products, whiteleg shrimp, beef and chicken; and protect the certification mark bearing the geographical indication “Ben Tre” for green-skin pomelo, green coconut and durian products in Canada and China.
At the same time, with a coconut area of about 79,075 hectares, the largest in the country, Ben Tre will promote the application of science and technology in coconut production and processing in line with domestic consumption needs and international markets. In addition, Ben Tre province will also promote investment and hold many seminars on building coconut carbon credits to seize new opportunities in commercializing carbon credits for the coconut industry.
