Mr. Nicolas Petro, son of Colombian President Gustavo Petro
Reuters quoted an announcement from the Colombian Attorney General's Office on July 29 that Petro Jr., a politician from Atlantico province and son of the current Colombian President, was arrested to serve an investigation related to the money he received from drug traffickers last year.
On his social network account X (formerly Twitter), President Petro confirmed that one of his children had been imprisoned, but affirmed that the Attorney General's Office had the right to detain the suspect to serve the investigation according to the law.
"As I made clear to the Attorney General, I will not interfere or exert pressure that could influence his decisions, the process will be carried out according to the law," the leader expressed his views on social network X.
The investigation was launched after the Semana newspaper published a letter of complaint from Daysuris del Carmen Vásquez, the ex-wife of President Petro's son.
Sharing with Semana , Ms. Vásquez said that she was present at meetings arranged by her ex-husband to receive more than 600 million pesos (3.6 billion VND) from a politician. This politician was convicted in Washington for drug trafficking and sought the support of the Petro family to return to politics.
Ms Vásquez said President Petro was unaware of her son's actions, and that the money was kept in a safe at the couple's home in the coastal city of Barranquilla.
Mr. Petro Jr. denied the allegations from his ex-wife.
