This afternoon, December 12, as Thanh Nien Online reported, the official holiday schedule for students in Ho Chi Minh City on the occasion of Lunar New Year 2025 has been agreed by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to be from the 24th of the 12th lunar month to the 5th of the 1st lunar month (a total of 11 days).
Students in Ho Chi Minh City get 2 more days off for Tet
Compared to the previously announced holiday schedule (from December 26th to January 5th), the new holiday has been extended by 2 days. And these are 2 days before Tet (December 24th and 25th).
Commenting under the article of Thanh Nien Online , Thanh Nien Newspaper fanpage as well as many forums for parents of students on the evening of December 12, many people expressed feelings of sadness and disappointment even though students were given 2 more days off for Tet.
Reader Nguyen Vo said: "Cutting the 5 days off before Tet and moving it to 5 days after Tet is more reasonable."
Reader Nguyen An The commented: “Parents need to have 2 more days off after Tet, but 2 more days off before Tet makes it difficult for parents to manage. Because during the days the children are off, the parents still have to go to work, so who will look after them, because everyone is busy with work during the last days of the year.”
Ho Chi Minh City students have new Lunar New Year holiday schedule, 2 more days
Reader PH shared: "Adding 2 days off for students during Tet, but parents still have to work during those 2 days, what will be the solution?"
A reader named “New Reader” wrote: “HCMC has a large immigrant population, and during Tet there is a high demand for returning to the countryside or traveling. I don’t understand why the leaders don’t give more time off after Tet but instead give time off before Tet, while on December 24th most parents don’t have time off from work, and on the other hand, the days leading up to Tet are very urgent and stressful?”
“Two days off before Tet is the same as not having any, we need to have time after Tet, it is even more difficult for parents because the factory still has to work”, “New Reader” shared more.

From a teacher's perspective, Mr. VN, a teacher in District 10, Ho Chi Minh City, said he supports the plan to increase Tet holiday days for students, but increasing them after Tet would be more reasonable and create more favorable conditions for parents and students if they have to move to their hometowns far away.
“The 2024-2025 school year will start on Thursday, September 5. So after Tet, students should have a break until Wednesday and start going back to school on Thursday (the 9th day of the first lunar month), which will match week 1, and the teaching program will still be guaranteed,” said Mr. VN.
It's difficult because 9 people have 10 different opinions, but we should fix the annual holiday schedule for students.
From another perspective, some parents believe that parents have different opinions and each has a different point of view. The students' Tet holiday schedule must be based on many factors such as teaching and learning programs, parents' vacation schedules, etc., so it is difficult to have a perfect Tet holiday schedule that meets everyone's expectations and wishes. Ho Chi Minh City has listened to the people and added 2 more days of Tet holiday for students, so that the total number of Tet holidays for students in 2025 is 11 days, which shows timeliness and openness.
There are even opposing opinions, such as reader “29826” who opposes increasing the break time with the reason: “If the Department allows more breaks, it will be very difficult for city parents to arrange work and take care of their children. The city not only has parents from the province but also local parents.”
However, many opinions say that every year there is Lunar New Year, the education sector needs to announce early and fix the holiday schedule for students. For example, every year there are 14 days of Tet holiday, including 7 days before and 7 days after Tet. This helps parents and students conveniently arrange their personal plans, go home to visit grandparents, and celebrate Tet with family members, instead of having a different holiday schedule every year, then public opinion, then the authorities propose, and then change.
As reader nt.kimthanh1905 shared on Thanh Nien Online : “It is quite late to change because most parents in remote provinces have already bought tickets to return home for Tet. It is quite difficult because the Tet holiday is short. Parents also do not dare to let their children take a day off for fear of losing their children's lessons.”
Many provinces and cities have announced the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday schedule for students. Generally, students will have 12-14 days off. Yen Bai students will have 14 days off, from the 23rd of the 12th lunar month to the 7th of the 1st lunar month. Quang Ninh students will have 13 days off (from the 28th of the 12th lunar month to the 11th of the 1st lunar month). Can Tho students will have 12 days off, from the 23rd of the 12th lunar month to the 5th of the 1st lunar month. According to the school year schedule, Tay Ninh students will have 14 days off for the 2025 Lunar New Year, from the 23rd of the 12th lunar month to the 7th of the 1st lunar month.
Notably, according to the 2024-2025 school year schedule in Kon Tum province, students will have 17 days off for Tet (official Tet holiday from December 25th to January 10th, if including Saturday and Sunday falling on January 11th and January 12th, students will have a total of 17 days off)...
