During the registration session for the residency program today (September 9) at Hanoi Medical University, Tran Thi Minh Anh (born in 2000) decided to choose Obstetrics and Gynecology. With a score of 26.75/30, Minh Anh passed the exam first, and was also the first person to be allowed to choose the residency program.
“I am surprised by this result, because there are many talented friends around me. It's just that I am a little luckier than them,” Minh Anh said.
Six years ago, the female student of Tran Phu High School for the Gifted (Hai Phong) won the national first prize in Biology and was one of three Vietnamese students to win the Gold Medal at the International Biology Olympiad in Iran. At that time, Minh Anh's wish was to be admitted directly to the Faculty of Medicine at Hanoi Medical University.
Minh Anh's mother, Le Thi Ngoc Ha, said that since she was a child, her daughter loved to "dissect" dolls. She often took apart each part to see what was inside the doll. Minh Anh also always dreamed of becoming a doctor when she grew up. The dream just kept growing. By the end of middle school, her teacher began to notice her talent for Biology. Since then, Minh Anh has been fully supported by her family to follow her favorite path.
For Minh Anh, Biology is both the most familiar and interesting subject among all the subjects. During her high school years, she had the opportunity to go on field trips to Quang Ninh or Tam Dao, learning how to identify plant families and the uses of each type. Such trips made the female student even more curious and eager to learn about the world around her.
“There is no better way to learn than through pictures. Only then can knowledge be absorbed more deeply than through lengthy theories. Personally, I don’t have any special learning secrets,” Minh Anh said.
When she became a medical student, Minh Anh said she never regretted her dream of becoming a doctor. After 6 years of pursuing medicine, the female student achieved a GPA of 8.37/10, being one of nearly 9% of students at Hanoi Medical University graduating with honors in 2024.

Also during her time studying at Hanoi Medical University, when she went into clinical practice, Minh Anh began to love Obstetrics and Gynecology and cherished this as a long-term career path. “I love the joy of taking care of pregnant women or newborn babies. The moment I saw premature babies or twins born healthy, even though the mother had many medical conditions before, and was able to participate in the treatment process, I felt very happy and meaningful. Therefore, I decided to stick with this field.”
However, Minh Anh admitted that the residency exam at Hanoi Medical University was “stressful and fierce”. With the goal of passing the Obstetrics and Gynecology program, according to Minh Anh, she must try to be in the top 20 out of more than 950 candidates to have a chance.
In fact, this year, among the 5 candidates with the highest exam scores, 3 chose to study Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Once she had determined her goal, the female student began to develop a specific exam preparation strategy. “The amount of knowledge for the boarding school exam is large and spread out, so a review strategy is very important. I also have to allocate my time reasonably between doing practice tests and reviewing the theory many times.”
According to Minh Anh, the basic knowledge during the 6 years of studying at Hanoi Medical University is very important and needs to be firmly grasped, such as Anatomy and Biology in the first year or Biochemistry and Physiology in the second year. Because these are all subjects from the first years, most of the knowledge will be "lost", so reviewing the basic subjects will take a lot of time.
“I feel lucky because when I was in high school, I had the opportunity to deepen my knowledge in Biology. These are all very good foundations for me when studying Medicine or when preparing for my residency exam,” Minh Anh said.
During the two weeks before the exam, Minh Anh studied all 8 subjects in one day to get used to the pressure so that when taking the exam, she would not be confused when switching from one subject to another. As a result, the Hai Phong female student achieved the highest score among more than 950 candidates.
Minh Anh registered for Obstetrics and Gynecology on September 9.
Choosing Obstetrics and Gynecology as a major because she believes that this is a field that still has a lot to explore and research, Minh Anh hopes that studying for a residency will be an opportunity for her to accumulate knowledge, professional skills and foreign languages, preparing for her future job.
“One of the things I am interested in is the opportunity to study and work abroad. If I have the chance, I still want to study abroad for a few years, then return to contribute to the medical field in Vietnam,” said the new valedictorian of the residency exam at Hanoi Medical University.
