The woman has never regretted her decision to marry and become a daughter-in-law in this special place. Ms. Nguyen Thi Yen Nhi (35 years old, from Kien Giang) has a husband named John Lapp (39 years old, from Pennsylvania), where there is a large concentration of Amish people. The Amish community here still maintains its long-standing traditions. They do not use cars, the main means of transportation is horse-drawn carriages, say no to modern technology, do not use electricity, etc. The Amish often wear simple and monochrome clothes, without zippers or buttons, and wear straw hats or black felt hats. Their food is prepared from self-sufficient ingredients. For a Vietnamese daughter-in-law, the cuisine here suits the taste of Westerners like her.

Simple wedding costs only 100 USD

Taking advantage of the time when her child was sleeping, Nhi shared with Thanh Nien about her life as a daughter-in-law in this strange place. She said that in 2018, John Lapp wanted to contact the outside world with modern technology, so he left the community and started a new life. He lived alone in a house but still in an area with a large concentration of Amish people. Thanks to his cell phone, he learned about and started making friends with people through social networks. He met a friend and was introduced to her by that friend.

In November 2018, he came to Vietnam for a vacation and wanted to meet her, but she refused. A month later, that friend still realized that there was a connection between them, so he suggested setting up a chat group with 3 people to talk together. Nhi joined with the intention of having another friend. Nhi and he were both Protestants. In January 2019, she went on a business trip to a church in Cambodia. At that time, he was learning about children's ministry, so the two talked to each other more and realized they had a lot in common. Not long after that, he decided to confess his love, expressing his serious desire to have a companion. She agreed to his confession, and the two officially fell in love.

They now have a very cute baby girl.

"In February 2019, he proposed and asked my parents for permission for us to move forward. The proposal was quite simple and he returned to the US 2 weeks later. In May 2019, he came back and we got engaged. After the engagement, he returned to Vietnam several times before my husband and I flew to the US to live," she said. In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic began. She went to the embassy to complete the procedures and went to the US. A week later, the entire airport was closed due to the impact of the pandemic. The couple's wedding took place shortly after.

They build their own houses and live a self-sufficient life.

However, when we met, I learned about the community, he also confided in me a lot before the wedding, determined that there would be difficulties, so I was not disappointed. In Vietnam, I also heard people tell their mothers, "Why is marrying an American so miserable, not as expected and life is not as rich as others", the woman recalled.

Build your own house, garden

At first, she was quite shocked by the heat, not used to the cold weather here. After the wedding, she discovered she was pregnant, so she didn't pay attention to what was said around her, trying to build a warm family. Currently, Nhi and her husband have a 2.5-year-old daughter. "I was also lucky enough to attend a wedding in the Amish community. The bride wore very simple clothes, without flashy makeup. Weddings here are often held during the celery season. Celery with salt is also a dish at wedding parties," she said.

To her, he is a gentle man who loves his wife and children.

John Lapp confided that during their time together, he realized that he and his wife had faith in each other. Despite their different nationalities and cultures, the two of them always had a bond. In married life, disagreements and arguments are inevitable. She often jokingly asked him to "send his wife back to the factory", but he laughed it off and never agreed. To him, she was the one God chose to be his wife, and she always had a special love for children.

In addition to the land for building a house, they use most of the area for gardening. The garden is a source of agricultural products to help the couple earn a daily income.
