"Sorry, our company does not hire people over 35 years old."
Ms. Tuyet Mai, 37 years old this year, has been working as an accountant at a small company for nearly ten years. Ms. Mai thought she would stay with the company and then enjoy her retirement pension after ten years. Suddenly, the company restructured and had to reduce its staff, and she received a notice of termination.
She is worried that it will be difficult for her to find a new job because accounting positions are now only recruited by companies that are young and it is very difficult for young people to find jobs.
She submitted her CV to dozens of companies and was only called for an interview by 6 companies, but was rejected by all of them. "Sorry, our company does not hire people over 35 years old," one company responded to her.
"It's really hard to find a job at this age," Mai sighed.

Speaking to Dan Tri reporter, Ms. Thuy Duong, an expert with many years of experience in supporting CV writing and interviews for candidates, said that every individual, every age, has the need to find a job or change their job or career.
With the current shortage of jobs and the abundance of candidates, whether they are new graduates or candidates over 35 years old, they will have to "spread out" their CVs and look for jobs.
"That's very normal and natural. Not everyone has good relationships and clear career paths to be introduced to a management position when they are over 35 years old," the expert shared.
There are people in their 35s who find themselves unsuitable for their current job and want to start a new field. Ms. Duong says that is a bravery, a spirit that is not afraid of change, not afraid of competition. "Having to submit a CV when you are over 35 is not a failure," she emphasized.
Sharing more, she said that there are usually 2 groups of candidates applying for jobs when they are over 35 years old. The first group is candidates who want to apply for management and department head positions. The strengths of this group of candidates are definitely their extensive experience, decision-making skills and management skills, soft skills that can only be acquired after many years of work.
The second group is the group of candidates over 35 years old who want to change their career or find a new job due to forced circumstances. This group is often less flexible when looking for jobs and applying for jobs, because they have not looked for a new job for too long. Therefore, their CV writing and interviewing skills will not be able to keep up with today's young people.
She shared that she once received a request for help writing a CV for a 41-year-old person who had worked in the government for 12 years and had never written a CV before. The CV was very new to this person because they had only known about the "job application" 10-15 years ago.
Age is not the deciding factor in everything.
Ms. Quynh Hoa, head of human resources at a private clinic, said that recruiting staff is always a headache for those pursuing a career in human resources. In particular, recruiting high-level staff with good salaries and benefits is even more complicated.
Sharing about the issue of human resources over 35 years old, Ms. Hoa said that it is not uncommon for people over 35 years old to start looking for a job, especially in today's fast-paced world.
In the health sector, Ms. Hoa often faces employees aged 30 and older with many more years of experience than young people. This group of people understands that sending a CV when they are over 30 means fewer opportunities and are more likely to encounter age barriers.
However, she does not think that old age means high years of experience, or that a CV over 35 years old is a low-quality CV. Because according to her, there are many people who need to change their industry or career, or in the past had personal problems and had to take a break for a few years, when they start again, they should be completely welcomed, instead of just judging one-sidedly based on age.
Along with that, Ms. Hoa believes that sometimes, old age does not necessarily mean high experience in that field. If not applying for a senior position, HR staff can consider suitable positions.

Sharing her opinion on this, Ms. Quynh Anh, CEO of a financial consulting company, said that Gen Z is the most interested group for new positions in the company, especially with start-up models. They are a young group, still enthusiastic and creative, willing to accept a moderate salary to accompany the company in the future.
For older staff, over 35 years old means they often require higher benefits and privileges. These people are often suitable for leadership positions at department level or higher.
In the recruitment position, Quynh Anh often filters CVs based on the job position first. This means that if recruiting for a sales or communications position, she often does not choose CVs from people over 30 years old because this group of people does not have the advantage of creativity compared to younger groups.
For leadership and human resources jobs, which require many years of experience and a certain level of certainty, Quynh Anh highly values people with 10 years of experience or more.
Thus, according to Quynh Anh, age is a part of life, old age means many years of working. If you are a candidate over 30 years old, show your neatness and responsibility from the CV preparation step to the way you talk to the recruiter.
It is difficult to say that old age does not affect job searching, but age is not the deciding factor. Therefore, how the candidate faces the new job opportunity.
Even with Gen Z - the group considered to have the advantage of youthfulness and creativity - there are still "this person and that person". Therefore, when going to work, the most important thing is attitude towards work as well as dedication to each job.
Sharing the same view, Ms. Thuy Duong also believes that in order to find a job more easily, one must first always improve oneself, enhance one's abilities and knowledge. At 30, 35 or 40 years old, one can continue one's current job or start a new one.
Candidates need to learn more about current recruitment and application methods to better understand the job application process, so they can prepare a good CV to get off to a good start.
