After the New Year, the Vietnamese community in Ulm City and surrounding areas in Germany enthusiastically organized a special year-end party and welcomed the New Year of the Snake on the evening of January 5, with the desire to preserve the traditional Tet in generations of Vietnamese families here.

Special day

Ulm is a beautiful ancient city located on the banks of the Danube River in the state of Baden-Württemberg. The Vietnamese community has about 500 people, working in many different industries such as restaurants, services, nail salons, factories...

Ms. Tu Anh, the representative of the association here, said that due to the nature of her busy work, in the past, socializing was limited to friendships, and Tet holidays were as simple and quiet as usual. People did not feel the jubilant atmosphere of reunion, only knowing how to look forward to their homeland with dear memories from Tet holidays far away.

In 2013, she, her husband and some other enthusiastic brothers and sisters in the area were determined to mobilize everyone to organize a reunion to celebrate Lunar New Year, so that people would have the opportunity to meet after a year of hard work, and for generations of children and grandchildren to have the opportunity to get to know each other.

Up to now, the association has maintained the organization of Tet for everyone almost every year, except for the interruption period due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a very special day of the year, eagerly awaited by the people, even deeply ingrained in the subconscious of the children who work or study far away, knowing that the festival day is the day to return.

Joyful

To have performances imbued with national identity, despite being busy with work and living far apart, the members still try to arrange time, plan the program, rent a hall, prepare costumes and props, and practice together a month in advance.

Performances such as lion dance, bamboo dance, monochord playing, modern dance, New Year singing... are extremely unique, bringing a joyful and bustling atmosphere.

The colorful and graceful performances of the Ao Dai by the sisters are held almost every year. Notably, many little girls who participated in the performance with their mothers since they were young have now grown into beautiful young women, still walking with their mothers on stage.

This year, the number of young people participating is much higher, some of whom study abroad, and when they heard that the association was organizing Tet, they quickly bought plane tickets to attend - according to Ms. Tu Anh.

"Some children even invited their friends to come along and introduce them to the unique traditional Tet culture of their homeland. The children actively expressed themselves and enthusiastically participated in singing and dancing performances, tug-of-war games, finding couples, and winning prizes..." - Ms. Tu Anh said.

Meanwhile, for adults, this is an opportunity to chat about life, business, tell each other about family, past Tet holidays and wish each other peace in the new year.

Contribute to the homeland

Unlike many other places, you only need to order a small party, which is less tiring. In Ulm, it has become an annual tradition that each participating family will contribute a homemade dish. Ms. Bach Van, a member, said that the women discussed it very carefully, assigning each family to make a special dish so that there would be no duplication.

The contribution of families creates a rich and attractive Tet party. Everyone can enjoy the full range of typical flavors of many different regions, from banh tet, banh tieu, goi cuon, goi han bo... from the South, banh cuon, gio cha, banh chung, nem ran, quay nong, xoi vo... from the North and banh it, nem chua, nem thinh and desserts from the Central region. In addition, there are dishes brought by restaurant staff such as sushi, roast duck, ha wonton, savory sticky rice...

Dozens of dishes were presented attractively and beautifully, not only attracting the attention of members but also impressing all foreign friends and in-laws, making them admire the diversity and richness of Vietnamese cuisine.

The echo remains

The Tet At Ty festival has passed, but the compliments and thanks for the enthusiasm and thoughtfulness of the organizing committee are still overflowing. Leaving behind all worries, everyone had a truly fulfilling evening, living in a warm and joyful Tet atmosphere, in the close-knit solidarity of the community. And it seems that the homesickness has also lessened a lot!

Preserving traditional cultural features to pass on to future generations - that is the concern and wish of the organizing committee, the prison bearers and the general staff in Ulm.
