FLACS technology transfer for cataract treatment

On January 7 and 8, 2025, Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital organized a scientific and technical seminar on 'Application of new advances in cataract treatment' right at the hospital with the participation of reports, instructions and technical training of ophthalmology experts from Singapore and Switzerland.

The workshop focused on exchanging and sharing experiences in applying new treatment methods and techniques. That is the combination of Femtosecond Laser in cataract surgery called Femto Cataract (FLACS) technology. This integrated technology helps to accurately locate the main incision line, the incision line to correct astigmatism, and the Laser also helps to open the anterior capsule and separate the nucleus into many small pieces accurately and safely. This is a surgical method that does not use a microsurgical knife at all.

Cataract surgery for patients using Femto Cataract technology

Discussing the Cataract surgical support method on the Femto LDV Z8 system, Mr. Werner G. Bernau, Vice President, Head of Clinical Research and Development at Ziemer Group AG, Port - Switzerland, said: FEMTO LDV Z8 uses low pulse energy levels with high pulse repetition frequency. This provides high precision and helps minimize the impact on corneal cells around the treatment area. Depending on the treatment method and the hardness of the cataract, the pulse energy level can be adjusted according to the doctor's requirements. In particular, the liquid contact surface helps slow down the increase in intraocular pressure, providing maximum safety for the patient.

In addition to exchanging and sharing experiences in applying new treatment methods and techniques, doctors from Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital and foreign experts demonstrated the application of Cataract surgical technology on the Femto LDV Z8 system for 17 patients. These patients were screened and diagnosed with conditions suitable for treatment using this technique.

After the workshop, technical guidance and training, doctors of Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital were awarded a certificate of receiving FLACS technology transfer from ZIEMER.
