On November 27, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine celebrated the 10th anniversary of the establishment and development of the Vietnamese-German Faculty of Medicine and the opening ceremony of the 2023-2024 academic year. This is a cooperation program between Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine and Johannes Gutenberg University (University of Mainz, Germany).

Started in 2013, after 4 training courses, the faculty has graduated 70 students. This is the first program in which Vietnamese medical doctors are recognized and continue to study postgraduate specialties and practice medicine in Germany.

In the 2023-2024 academic year, the school recruited 50 Vietnamese-German medical students from full-time medical students who met foreign language standards. Students will spend 5 years studying in Vietnam, 1 final year of full clinical practice in Germany and must complete 3 transition exams organized by the German National Institute for Medical Examinations.

Sharing at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Duong Anh Duc said that the current health system of Ho Chi Minh City includes 129 hospitals, 22 medical centers, 310 commune health stations and more than 8,000 private clinics along with a network of emergency services including the 115 Emergency Center and nearly 40 satellite emergency stations, meeting the needs of emergency care and medical examination and treatment for the city. The above figures show that Ho Chi Minh City is not only an economic, financial, scientific, technological and innovative center but also a medical center, a health care center in the southern region of the country with a hospital quality assessment score much better than the national average, with no group of criteria below 3.5/4.0 points.

According to the Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine is a public service unit under the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, assigned the task of training high-quality medical human resources for the city's and the country's health sector. The school has helped the city successfully implement the target of the Resolution of the 10th Ho Chi Minh City Party Congress for the 2015-2020 term, reaching a rate of 20 doctors/10,000 people by the end of 2020.

In the coming time, the Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee requested the school to continuously expand its scale and improve training quality towards international standards to help the city move towards the goal of becoming a regional health care center in ASEAN.

"Graduates from the Vietnam-Germany Medical Faculty cooperation training program will be valuable resources to help the city quickly move towards the goal of becoming a regional healthcare center in ASEAN," the Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee emphasized.
