Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's participation at the expanded G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan, conveyed the message of a dynamic, innovative, proactively and positively developing Vietnam, contributing responsibly to peace, development and common concerns of the international community.

Held within the framework of the G7 Summit, the expanded G7 Summit is an important international forum, bringing together leaders of seven leading industrialized countries and prestigious countries and international organizations to discuss and promote cooperation in dealing with global issues.

Guests at this year's G7 Summit include senior leaders from eight countries and six international organizations, including Vietnam, one of two Southeast Asian countries. This is the third time Vietnam has attended the G7 Summit and the second time Vietnam has been invited as a country, not representing an organization or group of countries in the region.

Join the fight against global challenges

According to Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son, Vietnam's participation is of special significance, reflecting the positive recognition of G7 countries and the international community for Vietnam's position, prestige as well as its efforts and positive, responsible contributions to promoting international cooperation in addressing global challenges in recent times.

At the upcoming Conference, Vietnam will continue to affirm its consistent stance and make every effort to join the international community in proposing and implementing practical and effective measures to strengthen global and regional cooperation in maintaining peace and stability, promoting recovery and sustainable development after the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as handling global issues on the basis of equality and mutual benefit such as ensuring energy security, food security, combating climate change, disease prevention, gender equality, etc. Through the Conference, Vietnam will send a message of determination to effectively implement its commitments to join hands in solving common issues of the world and the region, such as the commitment to reduce net emissions to "0" by 2050.

In the context of the international community facing crisis after crisis and the slow recovery of the world economy, this year's expanded G7 Summit consists of three sessions, with the following themes: cooperation in handling multiple crises; joint efforts for a sustainable planet; and towards a world of peace, stability and prosperity. Accordingly, the Conference focuses on issues including food, health, development, gender equality, climate change response, environment, energy, etc.

Based on these topics, Vietnam shared its development experience from the perspective of a country that is promoting industrialization, modernization and comprehensive and deep international integration. At the same time, this is an opportunity for Vietnam to learn from other countries about lessons, good practices, and effective ways to handle global issues as well as challenges to sustainable development, especially for developing countries.

Besides, this is also an opportunity for Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to meet with leaders of countries and international organizations to promote bilateral cooperation and discuss issues of mutual concern.

High level of political trust

The event is even more meaningful as Vietnam’s participation in the Conference coincides with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with the host country, Japan (1973-2023). This is a vivid demonstration of the high level of political trust between the two countries as well as the strong and comprehensive development of the Vietnam-Japan Extensive Strategic Partnership; at the same time, it demonstrates that the two countries share common ground and interests in many international and regional issues.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh is expected to hold talks with Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, meet with Japanese leaders, businesses and friends to discuss directions and measures to create new momentum for the bilateral relationship to continue to develop more strongly and effectively, better serve the interests of the people of the two countries as well as contribute more positively to peace, stability and development cooperation in the region and the world.

Developing strong bilateral and multilateral relations

Sharing many expectations about Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's working trip, Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Pham Quang Hieu emphasized that 2023 has a special significance as it marks the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan relations and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations.

For ASEAN, Japan is the first and always the most reliable and important partner, actively and effectively contributing to dialogue and cooperation for peace, stability and prosperity in the region. As a proactive and active member of ASEAN, Vietnam always closely coordinates with ASEAN countries and Japan to contribute to the strong development of bilateral relations.

On that basis, Vietnam will support and continue to closely coordinate with ASEAN countries and Japan to ensure the successful organization of the Summit to celebrate the 50th anniversary of relations in Tokyo in December 2023. Ambassador Pham Quang Hieu believes that this event will create a historical milestone, contributing to promoting and enhancing the long-standing, strong and effective relationship between ASEAN and Japan in the next stage of development.

With Japan, the Vietnam-Japan Extensive Strategic Partnership is in a period of strong and comprehensive development. Japan is Vietnam's leading economic partner. Cooperation in various fields, especially defense, security, investment, trade, ODA, health, agriculture, science and technology, digital transformation, education and training, climate change response, etc., is being actively implemented. The two sides closely coordinate in multilateral forums.

With such a good premise, the Vietnam-Japan relationship is said to have “limitless potential”. A series of activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year is an opportunity to look back and create a foundation for the relationship to develop even further towards the future, reaching the regional and world level as partners of equal status, bringing mutual benefits.

Taking place at a meaningful time, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's working trip is expected to contribute to further strengthening trust, promoting the development of bilateral relations, and promoting key contents such as economy, trade, investment, new-generation ODA, high-quality infrastructure, green transformation, energy transformation, etc.; enhancing coordination, sharing stances, and cooperation on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Climate change is a common concern between the two countries and is expected to be a hot topic of discussion at this year's G7 Summit. Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Yamada Takio hopes that Vietnam will actively contribute to the discussion on this issue within the framework of the Summit.

Affirming that Japan attaches great importance to its cooperative relationship with Vietnam, Ambassador Yamada Takio assessed that Vietnam's invitation to attend the G7 Summit this time is an important milestone to bring the partnership between the two countries to a new height, while creating momentum to promote this process.

With a clear message on development orientation and priority areas in line with common concerns, we believe that Vietnam will leave a deep impression at the Conference, demonstrating the image of a friend, reliable partner and responsible member of the international community, striving to contribute responsibly to common concerns, towards a world of peace, stability and prosperity.

The Group of Seven (G7), established in 1976, is an alliance of seven advanced industrialized countries: the UK, the US, Germany, Japan, France, Canada and Italy. The G7 plays an important role in shaping and strengthening global governance and structure. The G7 brings together the voices, reflecting the similar views and interests of developed countries in addressing common issues of international security and promoting discussions to address global challenges.
