The owner of the 2024 ASEAN Cup (AFF Cup) championship trophy will be officially determined after the second leg final between Thailand and Vietnam.
The much-anticipated Thailand-Vietnam match will take place at Rajamangala Stadium (Bangkok), at 8:00 p.m. today (January 5).
Before this decisive match, Vietnam is the team with the advantage in score thanks to the 2-1 victory at Viet Tri Stadium in the first leg.
With this advantage, Coach Kim Sang-sik and his team only need to draw in the second leg against Thailand to become the 2024 AFF Cup champions.
However, the 1-goal advantage of the Vietnamese team is quite fragile in the context of having to play on the field of the defending champion.
Thailand has an outstanding record against Vietnam when playing at home. They have won 8, drawn 2 and lost only 1 match.
Most recently, at the AFF Cup 2022, the Vietnamese team also lost 0-1 to Thailand in the second leg of the final, thereby sadly watching their opponent win the championship.
However, with what they have shown, the "Golden Star Warriors" are completely confident to change history and win the AFF Cup 2024.
"In Thailand, we will be under a lot of pressure from the home fans, but the whole team has prepared very carefully and the Vietnamese players have a very strong spirit, so I don't think it will be a big problem," coach Kim Sang-sik said before the second leg. "We will do everything to win the championship. We came to Thailand to beat the Thai team and win the championship."
Vietnam clearly has reason to be confident of achieving the best result because history is not on Thailand's side since the AFF Cup final switched to a home-away format.
Thailand has been behind four times after the first leg of the final, but they have only successfully come back once.
The only time Thailand succeeded when trailing after the first leg of the final was in 2016 against Indonesia.
That year, Thailand lost 1-2 to Indonesia at Pakansari Stadium in Bogor (Indonesia) in the first leg. In the second leg at home at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand won 2-0, and in the end Thailand won 3-2 after 2 matches.
The three times Thailand failed to win the championship after losing the first leg of the final, they were against Singapore (2007, 2012) and Vietnam (2008). In all three of these tournaments, Thailand lost 2-3 on aggregate.
The Thai team is now facing the risk of being "sorrowed" by the Vietnamese team for the second time and for the fourth time in history unable to successfully reverse the situation after losing in the first leg of the final.
Remember, history is also against Thailand as they have never won the Southeast Asian championship three times in a row.
