Japanese submarine joins drills in East Sea for first time Japan's Ministry of Defense confirmed on September 17 that a submarine and several other warships of the country's Maritime Self-Defense Force had just participated in an exercise in the East Sea. Reuters quoted a Japanese Defense Ministry spokeswoman as saying that the exercise took place on September 13. The Kuroshio submarine and three other warships, including the Kaga helicopter destroyer, participated in the exercise. The spokeswoman stressed that this was the first time a Japanese submarine had participated in exercises in the East Sea. Previously, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper cited several sources revealing that the Japan Coast Guard conducted an anti-submarine exercise, including detecting enemy submarines using sonar equipment. After participating in the exercise, the submarine Kuroshio visited Vietnam as planned. On the morning of September 17, the submarine and its crew arrived at Cam Ranh International Port (Khanh Hoa), beginning a 4-day visit to Vietnam. Faculty of Arts |
