VHO - After decades of research, the Can Chanh Palace relic (Hue Imperial City) is preparing to be renovated and restored with a total cost of nearly 200 billion VND. This is an important project located on the sacred axis of Hue Citadel, where the Nguyen kings held court and received foreign envoys.
On November 13, speaking with Van Hoa , Mr. Hoang Viet Trung - Director of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center said that the project "Restoration, restoration and embellishment of Can Chanh Palace" will be broken ground on the occasion of the upcoming Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day on November 23, 2024.
The project will be implemented over 4 years, with a total budget of nearly 200 billion VND from the Thua Thien Hue provincial budget. It is known that in September 2024, the People's Council of Thua Thien Hue province issued Resolution 78-NQ/HDND, with a plan to use the excess revenue from Hue relics entrance fees in 2023 to allocate a budget of 62.7 billion VND for the project "Renovation, restoration and embellishment of Can Chanh Palace relic".
According to Decision 2301/QD-UBND of Thua Thien Hue Provincial People's Committee on approving this project, the implementation of renovation, restoration and embellishment of Can Chanh Palace will be carried out on an area of about 1 hectare.
In particular, focusing on renovating and restoring Can Chanh Palace with items such as: renovating and reinforcing the foundation, curbs, and steps according to the original state; renovating and restoring the stone pedestal system; paving the floor with ceramic tiles; preserving and preventing termite moisture; restoring the surrounding wall with bricks...
In particular, restore the wooden frame system, roof system, wall panels, triple-joints, doors; preserve the moisture and termite resistance of all wooden structures; restore the gilded lacquer of the entire wooden frame system. For the roof system, restore the roof covered with Hoang Lap Ly tube tiles; ridges, eaves, panels, porcelain inlaid animals and decorate the front roof with enamel.
The project will also renovate the technical infrastructure system, including: interior lighting system, lanterns, exterior lights; fire prevention and fighting system; security cameras...
The restoration and renovation of Can Chanh Palace was based on documents from the time of King Khai Dinh. Through research and collection by the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, from its construction in 1804 under King Gia Long until its destruction, Can Chanh Palace underwent about 20 different large and small renovations.
In addition to information from historical documents and the Nguyen Dynasty's Royal Records, there are also many documents about images of the Can Chanh Palace relic taken from 1885 to 1945. These include photos of King Khai Dinh's coronation in 1916, a series of photos of King Khai Dinh's 40th birthday in 1924, photos of King Bao Dai's coronation in 1926, and the welcoming ceremony for King Bao Dai's return to the country in 1932. These sources of documents have contributed to the research work, helping to determine the height of the columns, the wooden frame system, the roof system and wooden structures as well as the decoration methods.
In 2023, the National Museum of History also coordinated with the Hue Monuments Conservation Center to conduct archaeological excavations at Can Chanh Palace for more than a month. Thereby, there was more scientific basis to develop a plan to restore this important relic.
Under the Nguyen Dynasty, Can Chanh Palace was where the king held court on the 5th, 10th, 20th and 25th of the lunar month; at the same time, this was also the place to receive foreign embassies, organize royal and court banquets. According to historical records, before being destroyed, this structure had the following structure: the main hall had 5 compartments and 2 double wings, the front hall had 7 compartments and 2 single wings.
Research on the restoration of Can Chanh Palace has been carried out for decades, especially since the 1990s. This project has also been studied by many domestic and international experts for restoration, notably experts from Waseda University, Japan.
Mr. Hoang Viet Trung also informed: Along with the groundbreaking of the project "Restoration, restoration and embellishment of Can Chanh Palace", on this occasion, Thua Thien Hue province will also organize a ceremony to receive the UNESCO certificate recognizing the Documentary Heritage "Reliefs on nine bronze cauldrons in Hue Royal Palace". At the same time, announce the completion of the project "Conservation and overall restoration of Thai Hoa Palace" and open it to visitors.
The activities at Hue Heritage Site on this occasion aim to respond to the celebration of Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day, thereby contributing to spreading and promoting the value of cultural heritage more and more deeply to the community.
