Water hyacinth ornamental tangerines "sold out" on the occasion of Lunar New Year.
Every year, as Lunar New Year approaches, traders and plant enthusiasts flock to Van Giang bonsai village (Hung Yen) to hunt for unique products to celebrate Tet.
The ornamental tangerine garden of Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh's family (Lien Nghia commune, Van Giang district, Hung Yen province) has been famous for many years for the products that Mr. Thach skillfully created into giant pots of ornamental tangerine with water hyacinth, gold bars or lucky tangerine pots.
Although Tet is still 1.5 months away, all the kumquats, gold bars, and lucky charms in Mr. Thanh's garden have been booked by customers and there are no more to sell. Currently, the few remaining trees are sent by customers, who asked them to take care of them until closer to Tet.
"This year, due to storms and floods, many gardeners lost all their plants. Luckily, my family only lost about 10% of their plants. In return, the price will be higher than last year, so hopefully the revenue will remain stable," said Mr. Thach.
Each giant kumquat tree is 3 - 4m high, more than 1m in diameter, shaped by Mr. Thach into a giant vase, priced from 25 - 30 million VND/pair.
"To successfully create many beautiful shapes, the tangerine tree must be planted for 4-5 years or more, at which time the tree will have many branches, many canopies, and be beautifully shaped," said Mr. Thach.
The kumquat tree is shaped like a gold bar, symbolizing good fortune, and costs 30 million VND/pair.
To attract more customers, this year Mr. Thach got creative with creating a lucky vase.
The price for each kumquat pot shaped like a fortune vase is 42 - 45 million VND/pair.
According to Mr. Thach, it takes 4-5 days to create a bonsai kumquat tree, and for difficult trees it can take up to 6-10 days.
Pruning also requires the worker to have a good eye and many years of experience.
From raw tangerine trees, Mr. Thach skillfully trimmed and created many different shapes.
The tangerine trees are laden with fruit, predicted to ripen golden yellow in time for the Lunar New Year 2025.
