Yesterday (October 19), Buriram United Football Academy announced that it had parted ways with coach Toshiya Miura. This means that the Japanese coach is no longer in charge of the Thai U20 team in the project to train a new generation of young players in the land of golden pagodas.
Buriram United FC and the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) have joined hands to implement a special training plan. The project aims to select 20 players aged U17 to train individually for 3 years, taking them to U20 level tournaments and aiming to qualify for the U20 World Cup in 2025.
Coach Miura says goodbye to Thailand U20.
Coach Toshiya Miura was chosen a few months ago to replace Salvador Garcia after the Spanish coach failed to take the Thai U20 team to the U20 Asian Cup finals. FAT chose Coach Miura after considering between him and Serbian coach Milos Velebit.
Coach Toshiya Miura led the national team and U23 Vietnam in the period 2014-2016. His outstanding achievements were leading the Vietnam team to the semi-finals of the AFF Cup 2014, helping U23 Vietnam win the bronze medal at the 26th SEA Games. Mr. Miura was fired after the Vietnam team lost 0-3 to Thailand at home in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
Thai football aims to send the U20 team to the U20 World Cup in 2025. This is part of a project to help the Thai national team enter the top 10 in Asia. FAT cooperates with Buriram United - one of the strongest and most financially capable clubs in the Thai League to develop the U20 team within 3 years, starting with the selection of the current U17 players.
However, the project of the Football Association of Thailand did not go as smoothly as expected. The Thai U20 team led by coach Miura has not participated in any official tournament. Meanwhile, the main team of Buriram United Club also said goodbye to a Japanese coach, Mr. Masatada Ishii.
