Joe Biden and Xi Jinping are expected to hold a bilateral meeting on Saturday, a US administration official said, in what could be the last meeting between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies before Biden leaves office to hand over power to President-elect Donald Trump.
APEC, established in 1989 with the goal of regional trade liberalization, brings together 21 economies that together represent about 60% of the world's GDP and more than 40% of global trade. The APEC Summit Week focuses on trade and investment to achieve inclusive growth.
The summit will also be attended by Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Australia and Indonesia, among others. President Vladimir Putin of Russia, an APEC member, will not attend.
President Xi Jinping and his Peruvian counterpart, President Dina Boluarte, attended the inauguration ceremony of the China-funded Chancay deep-water port north of the capital Lima via video link on Thursday, Xinhua reported.
In an article published in the official newspaper El Peruano, Xi Jinping said China is willing to work with Peru toward "true multilateralism" and "an inclusive and mutually beneficial economic globalization process."
Meanwhile, Mr. Biden will meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol — important partners of the United States in Asia — on Friday. Before leaving Tokyo for the summit, Mr. Ishiba said the talks would seek to strengthen trilateral cooperation.
