(CLO) On Monday (November 18), Chinese President Xi Jinping warned that artificial intelligence (AI) should not be "a game for rich countries and rich people" when speaking at Session II of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Xi also called for stronger international governance and cooperation on AI, Xinhua reported. Earlier in the day, he praised China’s support for the developing world and pledged more aid initiatives, including proposing an initiative with three other G20 members to help the Global South gain better access to science and technology innovations.

At this session on reforming global governance institutions, the Chinese president warned against protectionism in the name of green and low-carbon development, referring to tariffs on Chinese products such as electric vehicles and biofuels imposed by G20 members over concerns that the green transition of their economies could make them dependent on China.

"We need to improve global trade governance and build a world economy characterized by openness," Xinhua quoted Xi Jinping as saying.

Earlier, speaking at the First Session of the 19th G20 Summit on the Fight Against Poverty, the Chinese President also said that China is willing to cooperate with all parties to build a fair and common development world and outlined eight actions of China for global development.

To build such a world, Xi Jinping said, it is important to focus more resources on areas such as trade, investment and development cooperation, strengthen development institutions, and create more cooperation bridges, so that more developing countries can benefit and achieve modernization.

He said it was important to support developing countries to adopt sustainable production and lifestyles, properly respond to challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental pollution, enhance ecological conservation and achieve harmony between humans and nature.

Xi Jinping added that it is also important to remain committed to multilateralism and uphold the UN-centered international system, the international order underpinned by international law and the basic norms of international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

Xi Jinping stressed that China will always be a member of the Global South, a long-term and trustworthy partner of other developing countries, and a doer and pioneer for global development.

Before the conference began, Xi Jinping and other participating leaders attended the launching ceremony of the Global Alliance Against Poverty initiated by Brazil.

Xi Jinping, who is on a long tour of Latin America, also criticized protectionism when speaking at the APEC 2024 Summit in Lima, Peru.
