On the afternoon of January 12, at the National Assembly House, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue met with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who is on a state visit to Vietnam.

National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue emphasized that the visit is of great significance as the two countries have just celebrated the 10th anniversary of their Strategic Partnership (2013-2023); he believes that the success of the visit will be an important milestone for the two countries to work towards raising the Strategic Partnership to a new level, towards the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2025.

Recalling the good impressions of his official visit to Indonesia in August 2023, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue congratulated and highly appreciated the great achievements that Indonesia has made in economic development, ensuring social security as well as Indonesia's position and role in the region and internationally.

In particular, Indonesia successfully assumed the G20 Chairmanship in 2022, ASEAN Chairmanship and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in 2023 with many major initiatives on sustainable development, climate change response, maintaining a peaceful, stable environment, and development cooperation.

On behalf of the Vietnamese National Assembly, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to and strives to cooperate with Indonesia to promote the Vietnam-Indonesia Strategic Partnership to become more substantial and profound, meeting the aspirations and interests of the people of the two countries as well as the good friendship and cooperation between the two countries that was established by President Ho Chi Minh and President Sukarno and nurtured by generations of leaders of the two countries.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo expressed his pleasure at meeting National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue again and sincerely thanked National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue for his warm welcome to the President personally and the entire delegation.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo highly appreciated the positive results of the Indonesia-Vietnam Strategic Partnership, with the two countries having just signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Information and Communications Technology Cooperation and a Memorandum of Understanding on Fisheries Cooperation; saying that the two sides need to promote bilateral partnerships in demography, digitalization and high-tech industry. The Indonesian President emphasized that there is important support from the National Assembly to promote the relationship between the two countries.

At the meeting, the two leaders expressed their delight at the development of bilateral relations; agreed on the need to continue to increase delegation exchanges at all levels and channels, including delegations of the two countries' National Assembly leaders, to further strengthen the traditional friendship and good cooperation, and improve the effectiveness of existing cooperation mechanisms.

To continue developing bilateral relations, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue suggested that the two sides discuss the content and roadmap to elevate bilateral relations to a new level.

The two leaders agreed to strive to soon bring bilateral trade turnover to 15 billion USD. National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue suggested increasing trade turnover in a more balanced direction; the two sides facilitate key export products of the two countries; promote cooperation on Halal food, and share experiences in building institutions to develop the global Halal industry.

The Indonesian President asked National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue to support the promotion of policies to accelerate the energy transition; ensure autonomy and independence in the renewable energy sector; and implement a joint venture to produce electric vehicle batteries between businesses of the two countries.

National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue agreed with the Indonesian President’s proposal and asked Indonesia to create favorable conditions and legal procedures for cooperation in forming an ecosystem for electric vehicles and batteries; affirming that the Vietnamese National Assembly has issued many institutions and policies to promote the development of this field.

The two leaders highly appreciated the role of parliamentary cooperation in promoting the development of relations between the two countries. National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue asked the Indonesian President to support the two parliaments to enhance cooperation, exchange, and sharing of legislative experience as well as between specialized committees, friendship parliamentary groups, female parliamentarians and young parliamentarians; and to cooperate closely at multilateral parliamentary forums.

The Indonesian President agreed with the proposal of National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue; welcomed the Vietnamese National Assembly and the Indonesian House of Representatives to strengthen cooperation and signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in August 2023.

National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue hopes that the two countries will continue to coordinate more closely within the framework of the Government and parliament to contribute to strengthening solidarity, unity, and the central role of ASEAN, promoting the role of the IPA as well as maintaining peace and stability in the region.

The two leaders agreed that both sides should strengthen maritime cooperation. The National Assembly Chairman emphasized that Indonesia and Vietnam should cooperate according to the ASEAN perspective on the East Sea; promote the implementation of the DOC and coordinate in negotiating an effective and efficient COC in accordance with international law and the 1982 UNCLOS.
