According to Reuters news agency, speaking on May 15, President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen said that Ukraine having its own peace plan would be the starting point for any effort to end the conflict with Russia.
The statement came as China's special envoy for Eurasian affairs Li Hui is on a five-country tour, including Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Germany and France, to discuss a political solution to the Ukraine crisis .
Ursula von der Leyen has stressed the importance of Ukraine in the political solution to the conflict in its own country.
She also welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, stressing that Beijing needed to use its influence with Moscow to end the conflict.
In addition, Ms. Ursula von der Leyen said that new sanctions against Russia will be discussed at the European Council conference, scheduled to take place on May 16.
In a related development, on the same day, Hungary expressed support for China's peace plan for the Ukraine-Russia conflict, expressing confidence that it could serve as a basis for further negotiations to resolve the situation.
According to TASS news agency, speaking at talks with his Chinese counterpart Qin Gang in Beijing, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjart stressed the need to achieve peace as soon as possible and affirmed his support for China's solution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict .
On February 24, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced a proposal for a political solution to the Ukraine crisis consisting of 12 main points.
China believes that dialogue and negotiations are the only way to resolve the crisis in Ukraine, and calls on the parties supporting Moscow and Kiev to move closer and resume direct dialogue as soon as possible.
