Mr. T. said that these injuries all occurred during normal movements such as walking or going up and down stairs, making him start to feel insecure about the condition of his ankle. After each sprain, Mr. T. had difficulty walking, felt pain and his ankle became increasingly weak. Unable to bear the prolonged ankle pain after the third injury, Mr. T. went to the hospital for a check-up.
On October 17, specialist doctor Nguyen Tien Loc (Orthopedic Trauma Department, Xuyen A General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City) said that after performing the necessary clinical and paraclinical tests, the results showed that the patient's ankle was significantly loose. In particular, when conducting ligament function tests, MRI images showed that the entire ligament system outside the ankle was completely torn, causing ankle instability, ankle joint degeneration, increasing the risk of recurrent injury.
Arthroscopic reconstruction of the lateral ankle ligament for patients
After a thorough consultation, the doctors decided to perform arthroscopic surgery to reconstruct the lateral ligament of the ankle. This is a modern technique with many outstanding advantages such as being minimally invasive, minimizing post-operative pain and shortening recovery time.
Under the guidance of the arthroscopy system, the doctors used specialized instruments to reconstruct the torn ligament system by grafting autologous ligaments made from other tendons in the knee area. This process not only helps to restore the stability of the ankle but also does not seriously affect the tendons that were removed for grafting.
During the first few days after surgery, the patient is placed in an ankle splint and placed in a resting position to reduce swelling and allow tissue to regenerate.
A few days after the surgery, Mr. T. was discharged from the hospital and instructed on how to exercise. His ankle was more stable and no longer loose as before. He could walk lightly without feeling as much pain as before. In particular, he no longer worried about the injury recurring like before the surgery.
Do not be subjective, try to endure the pain when sprained
Doctor Loc recommends that people who are injured should go to specialized hospitals for timely examination and treatment. In most cases, ankle sprains can heal on their own after 3 weeks. However, about 30% of patients with sprains still have to undergo surgery to repair the injury. Do not be subjective, try to endure the pain, or arbitrarily use drugs of unknown origin, massage, joint manipulation... as this will be very dangerous, causing difficulties for the doctor's treatment process later.
"When an injury is detected early, endoscopic surgery can be applied to minimize invasiveness and reduce the risk of post-operative complications such as infection and swelling, helping the patient return to normal life and movement as soon as possible," the doctor recommended.
