The Vietnamese television drama market in 2024 signals a vibrant year when new dramas are opened, a series of new dramas have been, are being and will be broadcast. Will this create opportunities for young actors to shine?

Young people wish we could fly together

The two young actors who are currently "fascinating" the youngest audience in Wish We Could Fly Together are Le Hai (as Director Chao) and Trinh Thao (as Nhi).

On TikTok and YouTube, clips of these two characters are viewed and commented on a lot.

Le Hai is just "taking his first steps" in discovering acting. The guy with cute dimples was born in 1994 and entered the entertainment industry as a model.

Hai started acting in 2016. The movie Wish We Could Fly Together is the first TV series he participated in.

As for Trinh Thao, after a few supporting roles, she shined with the main role of Nhi - a girl who eats a lot, is somewhat clumsy, innocent and always finds ways to fulfill her dreams.

Along with Trinh Thao and Le Hai, young faces such as runner-up Thuy Dung, Vo Dien Gia Huy, Lanh Thanh, Tran Quang Dai, Luong Gia Huy... have created youthful vitality for Wish We Could Fly Together.

Previously, when part two of Us 8 Years Later aired, many viewers expressed their dissatisfaction because in part one, the two young actors Hoang Ha and Quoc Anh played the roles of Duong and Lam very charmingly and full of life.

And many people believe that one of the important factors that helps the movie Meet You on a Sunny Day , currently airing on VTV3, attract a large number of viewers is the gentle, youthful love story told through the performances of two actors Dinh Tu and Anh Dao.

The award to young actors taking on the main roles in the film also includes Shadow of the City , the male and female lead roles for singer Tu Tri and actor Trung Huy.

Or The Heir's Secret aired on SCTV14, the director also chose a not-so-famous face like Trieu An for the main role of Vincent, actor Xuan Van as Van, and actress Thu Bi as Anh Dao.

41 year old actor plays student: don't force it

Director Phan Dang Di shared that in all his previous films, he has focused on the casting stage. It is not only whether the actor is suitable for the character or not, but also their commitment to the acting profession.

"I want to work with young actors. Actually, you are very talented. If the audience knows you, your future path will be smoother," he said.

Director Minh Cao said that young actors are invited to play the role because when the actor is the right age, their acting style is suitable for the role.

He added: "I don't want my actors to have to act like they're younger than they are in my films.

To do this, the supporting cast must be famous people to support and help the young actors.

I was really under pressure. The producer asked the two unknown actors if the film would attract audiences.

But I argue that actors need to be suitable for the role. If they are not good at acting, we spend a lot of time training them."

The act of trying to act younger is not uncommon in Vietnamese films. In the film Under the shadow of peace , actor Luong The Thanh, despite being over 41 years old, still has to play a freshman in his twenties.

Although Luong The Thanh's acting ability is not denied, the audience is still disappointed. "Luong The Thanh is more suitable for playing the role of a parent" - one audience member wrote on YouTube.

In the same situation, Manh Truong played the role of Lam in the later stages of the movie We of 8 Years Later and was also criticized for being out of place and boring.

Director Buu Loc has a knack for finding brand new actors and contributing to enriching the new actor lineup for television dramas.

He said: "The selection of actors depends on many factors of the producer and investor. It is important that the director gives a convincing reason. Therefore, the casting stage is very important. I once put a script on hold when the casting could not find an actor suitable for the role."

Director Buu Loc said that working with new or old actors is difficult.

Old actors are safer in movies and don't waste time during filming, but it's also difficult to direct them as they are used to the way they act.

As for new actors, they are like blank sheets of paper, and directors can easily shape their acting in their own way, but filming will take longer and be more difficult.

"Actually, directors and producers can give young actors opportunities to work, but whether they shine or go the long way in their career depends on the young actors' own efforts.

For a director, there is nothing more joyful than seeing the actors he discovers gradually mature in their profession," said director Buu Loc.

From March 4, VTV3 channel will launch a new Vietnamese movie hour at 8pm from Monday to Friday every week. Thus, Vietnamese movie lovers can watch three movies at once on the VTV channel system: at 8pm on VTV3, 9pm on VTV1, then return to VTV3 at 9:40pm.

In October 2023, HTV7 will launch a new Vietnamese movie hour at 7:30 p.m. every Monday to Wednesday. Also on this channel, at 10 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Vietnamese movies will be broadcast. In addition, there are many familiar Vietnamese movies on SCTV14, THVL1 and on the OTT system VieON, Galaxy Play, K+...

The number of Vietnamese films produced is increasing, leading to an increasing number of actors participating in the films.

But the sad reality is that in recent years, there have not been many young actors with the ability to succeed their seniors. Therefore, Vietnamese moviegoers still feel bored because every time they turn on the TV, they see familiar faces.
