According to the AP, the lawsuit filed by Maui County states that Hawaiian Power Company and its subsidiaries have kept transmission lines operating despite exceptionally high winds and dry weather conditions. Maui County also argues that the utility has a duty to properly maintain and repair transmission lines and equipment such as poles, and to keep vegetation trimmed to ensure it does not come into contact with overhead power lines and other electrical equipment.

The August 8 wildfire in Hawaii was the deadliest in the United States in over 100 years. At least 115 people were killed, 388 were missing, more than 800 hectares of forest were burned, and the historic city of Lahaina was completely wiped out.
