Strategy for registration and adjustment of university admission wishes

According to admissions experts, setting and adjusting university admission wishes requires a strategy with 3 specific groups.

After knowing the high school graduation exam results, candidates have 10 days left to register and adjust their university admission wishes, until 5:00 p.m. on July 30.

Master Do Ngoc Anh, Director of the Center for Information and Communication, Hanoi Open University, advises candidates to carefully research the majors and clearly determine which major they like or are suitable for. This is important because only by passing the major they like and are suitable for can they hope to study well and find the desired job after graduation.

Therefore, Dr. Tran Manh Ha, Head of Training Department, Banking Academy, emphasized that candidates should put their favorite major and school as their highest priority, even if their admission score is lower than the previous year's standard score in that major.

"Put your favorite major in your first choice. If you fail, you can still apply for the following choices. But if you don't register, you will never be admitted," said Mr. Ha.

After that, the two experts advised candidates to consider the benchmark scores in the last 2-3 years, tuition fees, job opportunities after graduation, and the school's training quality. Candidates should choose about 6-10 wishes, divided into three groups.

Group 1 includes majors and schools whose average scores in recent years are 1-3 points higher than the candidates' exam scores. Group 2 includes majors whose admission scores are equal to or 1 point higher than the achieved scores. Group 3 includes majors whose average admission scores in recent years are 1-3 points lower than the exam scores.

For each group, candidates should list at least one preference. They should arrange their preferences in order of decreasing priority based on their preferences and suitability to themselves.

Mr. Ngoc Anh also noted a fundamental difference in this year’s admission compared to last year’s: when registering their wishes, candidates only need to choose the exact name of the school’s major without having to choose an admission combination. However, candidates need to research carefully because some schools have majors with separate quotas for each combination, so they must choose the correct major according to the admission combination that comes with it.

For example, when applying to Hanoi Open University, the Law, Economic Law and International Law majors have separate quotas for the C00 group (Literature, History, Geography). Candidates need to choose the correct major name Law (THXT C00), International Law (THXT C00), Economic Law (THXT C00).

Candidates who have been admitted early also need to have a strategy for setting their wishes. Master Phung Quan, admissions expert, University of Natural Sciences, Ho Chi Minh City National University, gives two cases that candidates often encounter: having been admitted to their favorite major and school through early admission methods or not yet.

Whether or not you like the majors that you have been admitted to early, you must register your preference in the admission system, otherwise your early admission will be canceled.

Specifically, if you have been admitted to your favorite major through the early admission method and have decided to enroll, you should put that major as your first choice, without having to register further. Dr. Tran Manh Ha believes that in this case, you should not put a major with a very high admission score in previous years at the top just to "test whether you can get admitted or not".

"If we do so, when we actually pass the entrance exam, candidates will not be able to enroll in their most desired major, which could lead to regrets later on," said Mr. Ha.

If you have been admitted early but it is not the major you want to study, Mr. Quan advises candidates to put the admission wishes based on graduation exam scores first and divide them into 3 groups as above. For the last wish, you should fill in the majors you have been admitted early but do not like, consider this as a backup plan if you unfortunately fail all other wishes.

Finally, candidates check again and pay the correct admission fee for the system to accept the registration and adjustment.

From July 31 to 5:00 p.m. on August 6, candidates will pay university admission fees online. Universities will announce admission scores and lists of successful candidates from August 22. Candidates must confirm their admission before 5:00 p.m. on September 6.

For reference and adjustment of wishes, candidates can access VnExpress to find majors and schools that last year had entrance scores close to the scores they achieved in the admission groups.
