'AI strategy will help Vietnam improve competitiveness'

VietNamNetVietNamNet05/09/2023

Hexagon’s Safety, Infrastructure and Geospatial division – a company specializing in digital reality solutions that combine sensors, software and automation technologies – recently announced a collaboration with technology company Fujitsu to develop digital twin applications that help predict and minimize the impacts of natural disasters and traffic accidents.

On this occasion, VietNamNet reporter had a short interview with Mr. Mattias Tidebrink, Senior Vice President, Asia Pacific Region, Hexagon's Safety, Infrastructure and Geospatial Division, about the application of digital technology in general, especially AI in disaster prevention and the story of traffic congestion in major cities in Vietnam.

Could you tell us how technological solutions can support Vietnam in coping with natural disasters?

With its unique geographical location in the Southeast Asian monsoon belt, Vietnam is exposed to a variety of natural disasters, including typhoons, tropical storms, floods, landslides, and forest fires. Digital twins can help predict and respond to these disasters more easily. High-risk areas can be identified in advance so that city leaders can deploy appropriate resources and response teams to affected areas and evacuate people with adequate notice.

Hexagon and Fujitsu are developing digital twin applications that can calculate the extent and impact of flooding based on rainfall data, model the extent of impact, and provide predictive damage analysis. From this analysis, city leaders can develop appropriate disaster response plans.

Our solution uses flood forecasting models and rainfall data to perform complex calculations that help model flooding conditions and address challenges across the healthcare, finance, and distribution industries. This includes forecasting infrastructure damage, developing disaster response plans, and estimating the extent of damage.

In addition, this solution also aims to ensure the safety of rescue routes and support infrastructure protection in abnormal weather conditions and natural disasters, thanks to sensors applying Internet of Things technology - IoT and weather forecasting services that help monitor temperature and rainfall.

By giving leaders and administrators the means to coordinate and model data across multiple sectors, including pharmaceuticals, transportation, energy, and the environment, we aim to protect people and social infrastructure from a variety of threats, including floods, natural disasters, and other hazards in an increasingly unpredictable world.

With the problem of traffic congestion in big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, what are the solutions that Vietnam should focus on to solve, sir?

We believe that digital twin applications can help maintain smooth and efficient traffic in large or congested cities like Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi by monitoring and mitigating factors that lead to road congestion and traffic accidents.

According to data from the Traffic Police Department, the number of deaths due to traffic accidents in Vietnam in 2022 reached approximately 6.4 thousand people, an increase of more than 10.3% compared to the previous year 2021 with about 5.8 thousand people.

Many accidents are caused by speeding, inaccurate road signs and poor road conditions. To reduce accidents, it is important to map out areas where accidents often occur, analyze the causes and propose solutions.

By combining Hexagon’s M. App Enterprise geospatial modeling tool with Fujitsu’s infrastructure services, the two companies have jointly developed an application that models high-accident areas; analyzes traffic density, road design, signage, and more; and provides recommendations that can help reduce accidents, based on the International Road Assessment Program (iRAP) road safety toolkit.

Such an application would enable city planners and road managers in cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to develop safer, more efficient and more flexible transport networks.

With artificial intelligence technology, Vietnam not only has an AI research and development program but also issues a strategy to apply AI to socio-economic life. What is your comment on this orientation?

Artificial intelligence has the potential to become a game-changer, driving social, economic and governance progress. Vietnam has launched the “National Digital Transformation Program to 2025, with a vision to 2030” and AI will be a key component in helping the country achieve its ambitious digital transformation.

According to Hexagon experts, artificial intelligence has the potential to become a factor that creates changes of the times, promoting social, economic and administrative progress. (Illustration photo: wealthmanagement.com).

At Hexagon, we are also using AI to harness the power of data collected from a variety of sources, including sensor data and human data. AI has the ability to help us perform predictive analytics and deliver critical insights, and inform actions that support a safer and more resilient world.

Vietnam is a dynamic economy with a young, talented population that is eager to adopt new technologies. We believe that Vietnam’s AI research, development and application programs and strategies will play an important role in helping the country improve its competitiveness and achieve its socio-economic goals.

Thank you!

The Ministry of Information and Communications promotes the development of a large Vietnamese language modeling technology platform . The Ministry of Information and Communications aims that by 2025, Vietnam will have at least one large Vietnamese language modeling technology platform, capable of providing services for other artificial intelligence application platforms.
