Except for the loss to Liverpool in the previous round, Chelsea had a pretty good January with 3 wins. However, coach Mauricio Pochettino's team still could not recover after a shocking loss to Wolves right at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea's disappointment
The Blues showed their superiority in the game and got off to a good start when they took the lead in the 19th minute thanks to Cole Palmer. However, the 10th goal from young talent Palmer could not help Chelsea avoid the shock that followed.
Wolves didn't have much attacking, but each pass and shot from the visitors brought a goal to make it 2-1 before half-time. Chelsea's defence showed their disunity again as Matheus Cunha equalised for 1-1, before centre-back Axel Disasi scored an own goal.
Chelsea (blue shirt) deadlocked against Wolves playing proactive counter-attack defense
The visitors had far less possession than the hosts but they almost completely nullified Chelsea's lack of ideas in attack. Raheem Sterling and Conor Gallagher could not create a breakthrough in attack, leading to striker Christopher Nkunku always being starved for the ball.
Pochettino's hopes of turning the game around were dashed early in the second half when Cunha continued to shine, helping Wolves increase their lead. The deadlock not only haunted Chelsea's attack, but they also conceded a fourth goal in the 82nd minute when Cunha successfully converted a penalty to complete his hat-trick. Although Thiago Silva reduced the score to 2-4 for Chelsea, there was not enough time for the Stamford Bridge team to turn the score around.
The shock defeat left Chelsea in 11th place and their hopes of qualifying for Europe fading as they find themselves 13 points behind the top five.
MU has an important victory against West Ham
In the same match, MU had an important victory over West Ham with a score of 3-0 at home at Old Trafford to maintain their goals in the Premier League this season. Alejandro Garnacho (2 goals) and Rasmus Hojlund were the ones who scored to bring 3 points for the "Red Devils".
With this victory, coach Erik Ten Hag's team took 6th place from West Ham. And with 13 points behind the leading team Liverpool, MU has not given up the race for the championship.
