NHK reported that the fire at the Taketoyo thermal power plant occurred on the afternoon of January 31. The plant is located in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan.

The local fire department received a call from residents at around 3 p.m. local time. Officials said they received reports of an explosion at the scene.

Black smoke rose from the upper floors of the factory.

Operations at the plant have been suspended, JERA, the country's largest power company and a joint venture of Tokyo Electric Power Co. and Chubu Electric Power Co., said in a statement, according to Reuters.

According to JERA, smoke and fire were detected on a fuel conveyor belt at the plant. The company reported no injuries.

The Taketoyo thermal power plant is located 40 kilometers south of Nagoya. Chubu said there was no power outage related to the incident. The fire department is investigating the cause of the fire.
