The local fire department received a call from residents at around 3 p.m. local time. Officials said they received reports of an explosion at the scene.

Operations at the plant have been suspended, said JERA, the country's largest power company and a joint venture between Tokyo Electric Power Co. and Chubu Electric Power Co., according to Reuters.

The Taketoyo Thermal Power Plant is located 40 kilometers south of Nagoya. Chubu Power said there was no power outage related to the incident. The fire department is investigating the cause of the fire.
