Reviving many lives through kidney transplants
On the afternoon of September 26, Duc Giang General Hospital shared about a successful kidney transplant from a relative's donated organ. The young man, PTH (24 years old), had glomerulonephritis, leading to kidney failure since he left school. Due to poor health, H. had to be hospitalized many times because his legs could not walk.

H and her son live next to Hanoi University of Industry. Every day, Ms. D (H's mother) goes to work renting clothes for a nearby garment factory so she can have time to take care of her son. In 2023, she knew that only a kidney transplant could help her son get healthy again, but she hesitated because the family's finances were too tight.
In 2024, Ms. D was determined to save her child's life at all costs, even if she had to sell her house. Knowing the family's difficult circumstances, in addition to dedicated professional care, the Board of Directors of Duc Giang General Hospital supported the cost of H's transplant.
H is the third patient at Duc Giang General Hospital to have a successful kidney transplant. Healthy after the transplant, H shared: "I will try to stay healthy, keep my kidney good to have the health to help my mother. I want my mother to not have to do heavy work from now on." Two weeks after the transplant, both mother and child are healthy and waiting to be discharged from the hospital.
Before H, Ms. NTBH, 26 years old, Tuyen Quang also successfully transplanted a kidney with a kidney donated from her biological mother. H was diagnosed with end-stage chronic kidney failure in early 2022 and had to undergo dialysis 3 times a week since March 2022. After a period of screening and pre-transplant treatment, the patient successfully underwent a kidney transplant by surgeons at Duc Giang General Hospital, under the supervision of experts from Military Hospital 103.
According to doctors, the challenge in this transplant is that the mother is relatively old and physically smaller than the recipient, so the risk of the transplanted kidney function not being as expected. However, with careful preparation, after the transplant, the health of both the donor and the recipient is completely stable, the transplanted kidney function and paraclinical indicators are within normal limits and quickly recover, returning to daily life.
End-stage renal failure has caused LBC (19 years old, from Quang Xuong district, Thanh Hoa) who is working as a leather shoe worker in Le Mon industrial park to collapse. Doctors at Duc Giang General Hospital advised him on kidney transplant methods to replace the failing kidney.
After screening for kidney donors who were family members, the biological mother was found to be suitable for C. After more than 6 hours of surgery, the transplant was successful beyond expectations. After the transplant, both C. and his mother's health improved. "I am very happy to have had a successful kidney transplant. Now I no longer have to be tired from dialysis or waste money, energy, and health. The successful surgery has given me hope for a new life," said C.
Opening up new opportunities for kidney failure patients
On September 8, 2024, Duc Giang General Hospital officially put its name on the Vietnamese organ transplant map by successfully performing the first kidney transplant for a female patient in Tuyen Quang.
To date, the hospital has successfully performed 3 kidney transplants and has mastered kidney transplant techniques with training and transfer from experts at Military Hospital 103.
Dr. Nguyen Van Tuyen, Head of the Department of Nephrology and Urology, said that in order to maintain life, patients must go to the hospital for dialysis every other day. Even with regular dialysis, patients can only do light work and try to take care of themselves, while participating in work, work, and study is very difficult. For these patients, if they receive a kidney transplant, they will have the opportunity to live a healthy life, live and work normally.
Sharing about the difficulties and advantages of the first kidney transplant at the hospital, according to Dr. Nguyen Van Thuong, Director of Duc Giang General Hospital, "after nearly 3 weeks of performing the first transplants (September 8, 11, 13), the patients recovered well. Fortunately, we carried out the transplants smoothly, without having to hold any consultations to deal with problems arising after the transplant."
Currently, the Department of Nephrology - Urology of Duc Giang General Hospital has nearly 170 patients, each day there are 80 patients on dialysis divided into 3 shifts undergoing periodic dialysis. Dialysis makes patients and their families tired, requires frequent travel and is expensive. Therefore, maintaining, developing and mastering kidney transplant techniques at Duc Giang General Hospital will contribute to improving the quality of life for patients.
I understand that next week the hospital will perform kidney transplants for two more cases. It is just the beginning, but in just one month, the hospital has performed five kidney transplants, demonstrating very fast speed and good technique. After the bloodline transplants, I hope the hospital will have more success in kidney transplants from other donors and have more transplants of other organs.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Hung, Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Health.
