From a mountainous commune of Ha Tinh, Lai Ngoc Thang Long made an effort to self-study and graduated as valedictorian of the Computer Science major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology with a GPA of 3.93/4 points.
Computer science is the hottest major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology with the highest entrance score in the country in the past 3-5 years.
With a grade point average (GPA) of 3.93/4, of which 5/10 were perfect, Long won the school's A-grade scholarship (the highest) in all semesters, along with many scholarships sponsored by businesses. The male student also had a scientific paper at an international conference, achieved a training score of 95/100 and was admitted to the Party.
"When I first entered Hanoi University of Science and Technology, I only set a goal of trying my best, not to retake any exams or subjects. Becoming the school's valedictorian was beyond my expectations," said Long, 23, from Duc Tho district, Ha Tinh.

Thang Long took the university entrance exam in 2018 - the year in which the high school exam was considered the most difficult since 2015, scoring 27.1 points in the combination of Math, Physics, Chemistry (including priority points). Although his score was 1.4 points lower than the standard score for Information Technology the year before, Long confidently applied to Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
That year, Hanoi University of Science and Technology separated Computer Science and Computer Engineering into independent majors with Information Technology. After careful consideration, Long chose Computer Science because he found it suitable for his ability to learn Mathematics.
Entering school, Long was overwhelmed by his friends' achievements. "They all won national and international awards, and were at least gifted students. Meanwhile, I was just a student from a village school, growing up in a mountainous commune, with worse learning conditions," Long shared.
Then the "rumors" that the Polytechnic was very difficult, that studying 1-2 chapters in a session was normal, also made Long wary. After studying the first three sessions, confirming that the "rumors" were true, Long only dared to set a goal of not failing any subject.
The student developed his self-study ability - which had been honed since his high school days in his hometown. Long started by paying attention in class and doing his homework. About once a month, he reviewed the lessons he had learned and practiced the exercises. Before each exam, Long searched for more documents and did exercises to systematize his knowledge.
After the first semester with an unbelievable score of 3.85, Long felt like he was "doping", forming a winning mentality, wanting the next semester to be higher than the previous one. Many specialized subjects related to his strength in Mathematics appeared, which also helped Long achieve better results.

In parallel with his studies, Long started working from his third year to gain experience and hone his skills. Thanks to his good performance, Long was selected for an internship program for talented students at Viettel and was ranked in the top 10 outstanding students in the field of Data Science of the program, receiving a salary of about 40 million VND for three months of project work.
Also during this period, Long co-authored a scientific paper published at the EAI INISCOM 2022 international conference on "Intelligent Traffic Violation Detection Using Deep Learning".
After that, Long studied at school and worked for a big data company, specializing in solving credit scoring problems for users, before working as a Data Science specialist at Techcombank in the second semester of his fourth year.
"Going to work early helps me accumulate a lot of knowledge, gain practical experience, and earn more income," Long said.
Thanks to winning many scholarships and starting work early, Long was able to buy a computer and pay for his living and study expenses. He didn’t have to ask for financial support from his family, and from his fourth year on, he even occasionally supported his parents.

Although studying and working at the same time, Long still has time to participate in scientific research with his teacher in the laboratory and extracurricular activities at school. The male student is a member of the EGG Club, a technology innovation club, and participates in teaching assistant, volunteer activities, and local volleyball tournaments. In addition, Long spends time on recreational activities such as watching football, listening to music, playing games, and playing sports.
Balancing activities helps Long not to be too stressed. The most stressful period for the male student was about 3 months ago, when he had to complete his graduation project and take charge of two key projects of the company. However, Long's project on applying Machine Learning to identify customer segments, warn of risks and collect debts still achieved an A+, highly appreciated by the council for its feasibility.
Dr. Bui Quoc Trung, Long's graduation project advisor, assessed that Long has outstanding expertise and experience in the fields of Computer Science, Data Science, and Computer Vision. Long has a very scientific working method, always planning and having a specific roadmap, and communicating regularly with teachers.
Before solving a problem, Long always analyzes and evaluates carefully, looking for background knowledge to be able to solve it effectively. The male student is also willing to update the latest knowledge to solve complex problems. Teacher Trung is also impressed with Long's ability to research independently as well as work in a team.
"Long's carefulness and decisiveness are his outstanding strengths. Long not only seeks effective solutions but also ensures feasibility and practical application. These are important and potential qualities for a successful graduate student," said Mr. Trung.
Currently, Long is still working as a Data Scientist, a job he has been working on for over a year. Long hopes to soon have promotions in his work and learn from his predecessors.
"If there is a scholarship to study abroad at the right time, I will consider it," Long said.
