Tyreek Lamar Sanders, who lives in Massachusetts (USA), posted on Reddit saying that he "feels ashamed" about being a garbage collector, and doesn't like telling others about his job.

Shame on you for being a garbage collector

He started this job when he was just 23 years old. Initially, Sanders was happy to have a job and wanted to take advantage of the opportunity. But over the past two years, he has begun to see his job as less important than other careers.

Sanders, a member of Generation Z, explained that being a trash collector is “looked down upon,” so he feels embarrassed to speak out about it. Despite performing an important role in society, Sanders said people don’t see it as a good career.

“I felt like my peers were encouraged to go to college. So when I didn’t go to college and decided to become a trash collector, I often felt like I was failing compared to my peers,” Sanders said.

Despite what others think, this Gen Z guy loves his job. He has great health and dental benefits, makes $24 an hour, starts early in the morning and finishes early in the afternoon. He also gets to listen to his favorite music or podcast while he works.

Sanders shared his thoughts on Reddit on October 8, asking social media users whether he should be ashamed of his job. The post immediately went viral, and within a few days had attracted more than 12,000 upvotes and 4,400 comments.

“I was surprised by the attention the post received. The responses really changed my perspective. The comments were so heartwarming, and I didn’t realize so many people appreciated the work of garbage collectors,” he said.

Positive and respectful feedback from the community

With more than 4,400 comments on the viral post, many Reddit users were quick to assure Sanders that he shouldn't feel ashamed of his career choice.

One commenter wrote: "It's a very important and respectable job. I think we should respect all jobs. But your job in particular is one of the most important jobs for society. Don't feel bad because you work hard in a practical field that helps people."

Another Redditor wrote: "If all the trash collectors in the world quit at the same time, society would collapse. This is an incredibly important and valuable job, and it's a shame that we teach people to judge the worth of others based on their occupation."

Another added: "I've never understood why being a garbage collector is something to be ridiculed or ashamed of. It's a respectable job and absolutely necessary for society to function, something many 9-to-5 jobs can't claim."

According to research conducted by Deloitte and the Network of Executive Women (NEW), Generation Z has a very different approach to work than previous generations. When deciding to take a new job, Gen Z is less concerned with salary and instead prioritizes work that is interesting even if it does not pay well.

The study also found that diversity is an important factor for most Gen Zers when looking for a job. They don’t just want to work for a company because of the benefits, but also because the company is diverse.
