"I don't want anything to happen to my people"
The image of a young man who lost part of his right arm, carrying boxes of instant noodles and mineral water to help flood victims has left a deep impression on many people. That is Nguyen Phuc Duc, a student at the University of Science (Thai Nguyen University). Duc has been actively supporting people for 3 days and 3 nights.
“After the impact of Typhoon Yagi, some localities in the North, including Thai Nguyen province, were flooded and many places were isolated. When I witnessed the images of my homeland suffering heavy damage, my sense of compatriotism increased. I had a burning desire to do something to share with my fellow countrymen,” Duc shared.

At first, Duc only shared posts on social media to ask if there was a place that cooked meals for the locals so he could join. After that, Duc was one of the first members to join the local emergency relief team after the storm. “At that time, the roads were deeply flooded, in some places the water was over people’s heads and flowing rapidly, making it extremely difficult to move around, and many places had no electricity or phone signal,” Duc recalled.
The student from the University of Science (Thai Nguyen University) confided: “When I received the distress messages from the people in the flooded area, it really made me choke up. But I was helpless because I couldn’t get close because the water was deep and flowing fast. However, luckily the next day when the water receded, our group coordinated with the authorities to bring food and drinks to the people.”

In that difficult situation, Duc participated in supporting the people for 3 days and 3 nights. And during that time, this young man could hardly sleep. “Although sometimes my body was tired so I went back to my room to rest a bit. But when I received messages and calls asking for help, I was restless with grief. It was not until dawn on the 3rd day that I was able to sleep for a short time,” Duc said.
Duc confided that when we call each other compatriots, when they encounter difficulties, they are like his relatives. “I don’t want anything to happen to my compatriots. I’m glad I took action at that time. Maybe those actions are nothing compared to many others, but at least I contributed to supporting my compatriots,” the young man said.

Previously, Duc was also known as one of the individuals who donated blood voluntarily many times. Up to now, this young man has donated whole blood 31 times to save people. "I have been donating blood voluntarily since 2016. This does not affect my health but also helps others, so I have maintained regular voluntary blood donation for many years," Duc shared.

Born a healthy child, but in 6th grade, Duc had an accident when a water tank fell on him, crushing part of his right arm. From then on, Duc's life encountered many inconveniences, everything seemed to be turned upside down.
The male student confided: “At that time, I complained a lot about my fate and thought that life was so unfair. I used to feel very self-conscious about my shortcomings. I used to think that I would not be of any help and would even be a burden to society. Then, instead of blaming myself, I accepted it and lived a better life. Now I have a normal life like everyone else.”
Duc continued: “Since participating in volunteer activities and trying to contribute, I have realized that I have a certain value for society. I am very happy to have overcome my complexes and conquered myself. For me, participating in volunteer activities is a passion and a responsibility to the community.”
Through his contributions, Duc hopes to inspire young people who are unfortunate enough to have disabilities like himself. “Don’t be self-conscious or feel inferior, but use it as motivation to rise up because disability is not a misfortune but just an inconvenience,” Duc shared.

With his contributions to the community in the volunteer field, Duc is one of the individuals receiving the "Beautiful Youth" award in 2024.
“I was quite surprised to receive this award. I did not think that my small actions would have such a widespread impact. Moreover, when doing volunteer work and helping others, I always rely on the spirit of giving without expecting anything in return. Therefore, awards or titles are not the ultimate goal. What I always aim for is to help people. However, this milestone also has a special meaning, helping me look back at the process in which I have contributed,” the young man shared.
The 2024 “Beautiful Youth” Award is organized by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Youth Union in collaboration with TCP Vietnam Company Limited. The award ceremony will take place in October 2024 in Hanoi .
